i think my sow has bloat
is there anything i should do?

Yep, go to a vet for diagnosis of which type of bloat it is before you can start treating. Time is of the essence so I would just march in there and announce its an emergency.
 
I agree with Karen, bloat is serious and without meaning to scare can be fatal, she needs to see a vet as soon as. :)

You'll need veterinary drugs anyway so best to go and see a vet. :)
 
oh crumbs! :'( i thought it just meant gas :P i didn't realise. what are the symptoms?
she has an enlarged stomach and we have heard gurgling, could this be it? she is not off her food.
Oh i hope this isn't me overreacting again!
 
thanks for that very helpful :) well i'll give her some infacol and do some massaging, but she doesn't look nearly as big as your poor darling, only slightly. i think it's gas and is due to all the brussels tops and other brassicas she's been eating. ::) will be cutting down those! i will keep a very close eye on her, and if she seems uncomfortable or it gets bigger i will rush her to the vets asap. she is still eating, running and pooing so i think it's only very mild.
in my piggy book it says to give a teaspoon of vegetable oil and massage the stomach if it's only mild and seek vetrinary advice if it's very bloated.

3 years ago we had a guinea pig who had bloat, she was an amazing guinea pig and we loved her dearly, took her to the vet and was told to take her hold and give her some olive oil. which she didn't want and she was off her food, got so worried we too her to the after hours emergency vet 40kms away and they knew nothing about guinea pigs, so went home again. next day went to the vet who knew about guinea pigs who took x-rays and kept petal in over night. petal got rid of the bloat but was found dead at the vet in the morning. they believe she was stessed with her condition and had had a heart attack. she was 5 years and 3 months old.
here in adelaide in south australia you are lucky if you can find a vet that knows about guinea pigs, they are taught about guinea pigs as lab animals only when training to be a vet. and sadly a lot of people don't bother taking their guinea pigs to the vet. they think well it only costs $10.00 to buy a guinea pig so why waste money on a sick one when we can get a new one. petal's symptoms were not eating, quiet, unusal behaviour and a rock hard stomach. if only we could get a vet who knew about guinea pigs we would feel a lot better. hoping your little baby got better. :)
 
aw thats so sad :'( i'm so worried, but she isn't quiet, she is eating, isn't doing any unusual behaviour and her stomach isn't rock hard, it feels a little tight. i went on the peter gurney sight and followed his instructions to find out weather it was fluid or gas, and i'm quite sure it's gas. i will continue to follow his instructions, and hope it gets better with that, i promise you that nothing means more to me than my piggies, and i will keep a very good eye on her and if she stops eating or anything unusual happens we'll be off to the vets. if peter gurney had said it must be off to the vets straight away i would go, but he does say you can treat it yourself, and i'd rather not stress her out by going to the vets it's a long and uncomfortable journey. :)
 
i just gave her a teaspoon of olive oil and gently massaged her tummy, much to her disgust! ::)
i'm getting some infacol so will give her that. and rennie as peter gurney says. should i just put her on hay and water and dried food? if so how can i do this, she's with another girl.
 
i've given her rennie and buscopan, as directed by peter gurney. she is running around a bit and eating still
 
ok have now massaged 30 mins after giving the medicine as directed.
On one side her tummy has gone down and it seems less tight, so i hope we're om the way to recovery :) been a lot of gurgling going on too! :o
 
Gosh poor lil girl :P Glad her bloat has gone down O0 keep on trying and I'm sure shell be fine in no time :smitten:
 
thanks, i'm keeping a good eye on her :) she seems happier now i'm keeping her off cabbage and brassicas for a while! but she's had a little apple and pepper. lots of water hay and dry food :) i know it's not over but i feel releived now it seems to be going the right way :) she did a poo YAY! :D i never thought i'd be so happy about her pooing ;D ,but she wasn't before
 
just checked on her, she's been eating and moving around she looks much better in herself O0. her tummy looks slightly deflated still :) and there are plenty of poos around ;D :D :)
 
checked on her this morning, she is deflated a lot on one side, but the other is a bit bloated still. i will repeat the dosing today and massaging and see how that goes. she seems fine, she tucked into her breakfast and seems alert and everything and there's plenty of poo around ;D she seems fine apart from it being a bit sore :smitten: (and that she has olive oil all over her face from yesterday when i was giving her it, she jurked and it went everywhere! ::) ;D)
 
that is great news, wish i had known all this 3 years ago when our baby petal had bloat. i am also glad i found this site as guinea pig knowledge here in australia is appalling. when petal had bloat one vet asked me if she had thrown up. i thought i knew a bit about guinea pigs, but i look an igorant fool compared to you all. i have books including peter gurneys, but still feel igorant.
good news about your baby hope she keeps improving. ;D
 
just gave her some more olive oil and a massage as directed, i think she's beginning to like being massaged ;D bless her, i can tell it hurts her though. will do the rennie and buscopan later. 24 hrs after she had it yesterday, i don't want to overdose ;)
i'm sure you're not ignorant! i don't know nearly as much as some on here, but i am caring and am always learning! :) some disgusting people just shove them in a shed, ignore them and treat them like oversized hamsters! :tickedoff: now that is ignorant.
 
i gave her the rennie and buscopan and then massaged. i think she's going down. if she isn't better by the end of tomorrow, i'll be making an appointment at the vets. i'm pretty sure it has deflated a bit though, and i'm pretty sure it's bloat. it sounds hollow, her stomach was distended and tight feeling and she wasn't pooing, which she is now :)
 
She's now got dihorrea, could be because all of the stuff i've given, i'm only doing as instructed, but i feel so bad, so she's gonna have to be on hay and dry food and water and we're seeing a vet hopefully today :'(

i got her out because i don't think she's drinking much and i gave her some water through a syringe. she doesn't seem to be eating. But she is alert and responsive and she's had a run around. her stool isn't like water now it's just very soft. I know what a really seriously ill piggie is like, and she's not like that, so hopefully by seeing a vet we can nhip it in the bud.
i'm moving her and her friend Mimi indoors where i can keep a close eye on her, and they're going to be on dry food, hay and water.
i'll let you know how we get on at the vets. O0

been to the vets. he seemed piggie savvy which is good! O0 he said i've done everything right and basically done his job for him. he thinks it was a bloat and the medicines i gave releived the bloat, but the dihorrea just needed to come out. he said it's the stuff we gave her that has made the bloat 'deflate'.
she's been drinking loads and eating the hay and dry food. he said to keep her on just water, hay and dry food until tomorrow and then very gradually re introduce bland foods one at a time, and see what happens. he thinks the worst is over and that she'll just get better now PHEW! O0 and if we have any worries or if it gets worse or doesn't get better to come back and he'll take some xrays, he had a good check over on her and felt her tummy, he said it could have been ovarian problems, but he can't feel anything and if it's gone down it shouldn't be that. she seems ok, just a bit tired, i think the dihorrea has stopped now. He also said he was impressed by how much i knew and had done LOL! ;D good old peter gurney!
