I always seem to post on this board.... urgent, pretty serious threads too :(

This time it's my 5 month old sow, Heather. She ate last night and seemed fine, had a good run about etc. This morning she is able to get around, but she's bloated, her stomach feeling hard, and refuses food. She is drinking a lot of water, I'm making sure she doesn't take too much though.

She's not tempted by grass... hay.... etc etc

She's been in a hospital cage since 8 am and hasn't pooped. I don't know if it's the bloat causing a blockage, the not eating.....?
Help!

The vet will see her now.... I'll update soon! Any opinions and advice is great xxxxx

Poor Heather, and you too Kt! Sometimes it feels never ending.

It sounds very worrying, I hope the vet is able to get her sorted. It certainly sounds like bloat, all the classic symptoms. An x-ray may be necessary to determine if it is a blockage, stasis or torsion causing the bloat. No force-feeding as it sounds possible that it is a blockage, and until that has been ruled out it would not be wise to force food if there is a chance that it can't move through the system! As you say, it is otherwise hard to know if the not pooping is caused by the bloat (or blockage) or not eating.

Best of luck. xx

Healing WHEEEEEEEEEEKS and loves to little Heather xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>
Gosh love you've had a rough time lately, HUGS to you too xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I have my fingers crossed for her, bloat is a horrible thing. Will be thinking of you both x

Oh my goodness, keeping everything crossed for your little one, we recently lost our gorgeous boy to bloat so know exactly what you are going through.

Sending mega healing vibes.

Heather woke up from the x ray but she is blocked with non food, they don't know what it is, but she then had very laboured breathing, and every time she ate, she gagged on her food and her mouth would foam up, she had some sort of seizure about 3 times, before falling into a very long, deep, sleep in my arms... I thought she would pass away but she woke up and had another fit, jumping off me and fitting all over the room. I made the decision to get her put to sleep an hour ago..... however the vets are keeping her in for a short while to monitor but ive said my goodbyes and i miss her sososso much. They want to try work out the problem (wont allow a post mortem). i feel numb.

I hope nobody thinks I'm a bad guinea pig mum. I feel that I made the wrong decision.

Oh no that must have been so upsetting :( i'm so sorry. Are they trying to help her or just trying to figure it out as research? Seems odd. I'm thinking of you, bloat is so sudden and not a nice way to lose a pig at all x

Nobody will think that. I suspect if I was in that situation, I would do the same, although I disagree with the vets decision to keep her alive to "figure out the problem" after you have said you wish for her to be put out of her suffering.

Sending loads of *hugs* your way Kt. x

I'm so sorry. I do wonder when people say fits, could it be the 'running to the bridge' movements that they do? Pearl did similar and in the end she give up. It's hard seeing that especially when in life they were so active.

I am still keeping everything crossed here as you never know they may work it out and find what is wrong with her. She is so young, bless her. x

I called the vets and said don't pts her. I want them to watch over her and give meds if possible & she agrees, she said if by the morning there is no improvment to let her go, but I said it really just depends.... I won't just let her go, she is so young. The vet nurse got some nutri cal, she went crazy for it, to her, and some fluids by a drip, she isn't foaming up any more too..... she had another fit at the vets... I'll just see how things go really.

Have they tried the simple approach, Buscopan, Colic Drops and needle aspiration of the trapped gas?

I hope nobody thinks I'm a bad guinea pig mum. I feel that I made the wrong decision.

You made the right decision for the piggy trust me, I sat with pearl for 5 hours and slowly watched her die, all I could do is give her a last meal of CC and water. I lost count how many times I stroked her! 8...

From what it sounds like is that she had some sort of growth and resulting stroke but hey I'm not a vet.. Nobody will feel badly over what you did for your piggy 8...8...

Why do you think she had "some sort of growth"?
I assume she was given a GA for the x-ray, her behaviour could be post anaesthetic-shock.

Well, non food usually means growth of some sort or a swelling, but that aside.. I just want to wish KT1 well, I wish not not discuss it further as she is upset enough without us debating what could have been or is wrong!

Ta ta

Petcook the vet basically said what you had said regarding what it could be caused by. She's still at the vets. And my vets have given her treatment yes, they will see how she is by 8am and call me then. They have staff in overnight luckily, tonight - otherwise, she still wouldn't be there.... I'm hoping that she is ok.:(

The vet still have her, she is slowly improving, and she will be going under today and they will see if they can remove the blockage if there is one.

Fingers crossed. I'm very weary with GA but sometimes like in this case there is no choice. Will be thinking of her, she is only a babe I hope she gets better. x

GA is so risky and I would never ever neuter or spay a female piggie unless it was extreme cases or health problems (obviously). But it's that, or I do nothing :( And like said this is all i can do.

I am hoping for some good news later today. It is encouraging that she is improving somewhat, I just hope the vets can sort out the problem. xx

Its good news that she's still with us and improving slightly, still keeping my fingers crossed for more good news later x
