Hello everyone i wonder if anyone can give me advice on how to help a bloated guniea pig. I dont feed him broccoli, kale,or cauliflower. His not medication or anything. He still poops and wees but his belly seems a bit big.

Is he eating and drinking and otherwise active? If so then he doesn't have bloat. With bloat he would be lethargic and would stop eating, it would be a life or death emergency that would require a vet immediately.

If you are thinking your piggy is overweight I recommend checking the heft you should be able to feel the ribs with a layer of fat over them without pressing too hard. Some piggies are just rounder in the stomach department than others

His had a stone removed not long ago. His been on a strict diet. His eating and drinking. But he doesnt really want to come and run.

I have had a pig with bloat that made him stop eating altogether and pigs that have had bloat not as bad and still eat a bit. Does he look big on one side more than the other? When you lightly tap that side, does it sound a bit like a drum? A vet trip is needed if so

Do you have some photos or a video you could share? It may help people to help you a bit better. :)

Please have any guinea pig that you suspect of bloat vet checked. Acute severe bloat with a belly as tight as a drum can kill.

Has the belly gone a lot bigger in just a few hours? Is his belly soft or tight at least in places?
Has your piggy eaten a lot of fresh grass or lettuce lately?

Severe bloat can hit out of the blue and is not necessarily diet related.

Thank you all for your replys,
I have had a feel today and its not on one side its on both. But its not tight it feels soft when j touch it. His eaten some grass and has fresh vegetables everyday. He still eats and poops and wees he just feels round. Can it just be the way his belly is. Just worried

If in doubt, please see a vet. We cannot do a hands-on examination online to give you the answer you need.

How long should you stay off the veg when the guniea pig is bloated?

Until bloat has gone and the pig is pooing normally again shape and amount. Is the bloat being treated?

Hi!

I strongly recommend to wait at least 2 days before you slowly and gradually start reintroducing veg, adding one variety more with every meal. Please be aware that it can takes many weeks before the digestive system stabilises again and gut stimulants and anti bloating meds need to be taken for a while longer. Bloat can flare up worse than ever at any time during that period.

What has your vet said on this score? If you haven't seen a vet, please do so and make absolutely sure that you have the means to see one asap if there is another flare up. Bloat can kill, and you are by no means out of the woods yet.

Here is our detailed bloating care advice, which also deals with this aspect: Bloat, GI Stasis ( No Gut Movement) And Not Eating

I am moving your thread to the specially monitored health and illness section and merging any of your bloating threads as we prefer to keep everything that pertains to the same ongoing case together.

If symptoms have not improved, then please contact your vet. See them as an emergency if your boy is suddenly getting worse at any point.
