Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice if anyones had the same problem. We had our male guniea pig neutured last year and then he had an apsys(sp?) which turned out to be blocked poo because he's lazy and doesnt clean himself. We looked at him the other day and he seems to be blocked again, he can poo but there seems to be a lot of poo stuck inside which we cant get out. we have been bathing him but nothing is working. I wondered if anyone could give us some advice please?

Barmy4Boars has some great info on impaction - well worth a look as this is something you need to get on top of asap otherwise your piggie will become very ill indeed.

awww poor boy has got an impacted butt basically the muscles are not as strong for what ever reason and they cannot expell all the poo they can pass the pellets around the blockage I tend to let the pig run about in warm water in a shallow bath and it lkoosens it, thicker stuff needs removing as already suggested look that up, as its quite detailed but comes easy with experience I can pop a butt quite simply now but its taken me years, and be warned the smell could clear a room in 2 seconds its evil but the pig looks so happy once he has a clean butt its worth it,

thank god youve not smelled my hubbies socks then LMAO

Sounds like he is impacted. This needs to be checked and you will need to help him clear the area regularly as he can't do it for himself.

Thanks for all your replies :) we've been bathing it and it looks a little clearer but theres still a bit there. I read on one site that Vitamin E oil or Olive Oil can help soften it does anyone know if this is true?

No idea if it is true. Haven't tried my Tonni on any though. He has impactions too. Has done for about 2 ish years now :)

Positively New To This Site

I thank you all for the information that I have gathered here on impactions in male piggies and, most importantly, how to remedy them and make our Blaster more comfortable. We're not sure just how old he is, but he has slowed and is not quite as active as he was when our daughter acquired him 2 years ago. Anyway, I do have a one question that I'm almost sure you all can help with. He doesn't seem to want his hay as much as usual. He eats his lettuce and dry food, and drinks his water....but is there anything else we can offer to reduce the occurance of the impactions? Maybe another form of roughage? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I've become quite attached to little guy. He's so loving!
