One of our guinea pigs seems to have one issue after another! Fudge has had a small amount if blood around her vagina - I first noticed it after seeing a smear on the fleece yesterday. She is only young (1 1/2), fine in herself and hasn't lost any weight. Took her to the vet who suggested getting a urine sample but I've failed miserably - over two hours in a litter tray with cucumber and small amount of hay but nothing. Syringed as much water in her as she would take. Tried putting her back in the run ready to catch it but she started to wee then stopped as soon as I got close with a pot! Rang the vet back who advised 5 days of Metacam and see what happens. If it continues they will admit her to try and get a urine sample or to do an ultrasound. So my questions - has anyone experienced similar and can offer any reassurance? There is no obvious blood in her wee just tiny amounts every now and then round her vulva. If the vet admits her and does an ultrasound etc, any idea how much it is likely to cost? Obviously you can't put a price on your guinea pig's health, but it would be good to be prepared! Ant other advice for trying to get a urine sample? Thank you!

I'm sorry to hear about your piggy.
I have no experience with this, but plenty of others will. :)
In terms of pricing, it may be best to get a quote from the vet directly. My vets have always been happy to give me a quote, and it's normally pretty accurate.

I am very sorry for the problems you and Fudge are having 😞 It can be quite tedious trying to get a urine sample and I’m afraid the only way is by sitting and waiting. One of my girls once left me waiting nearly 3 hours but she did eventually go. When piggy has wee’d, it’s an idea to quickly remove them so they do not accidentally sit in it and then suck the urine up in to an unused clean syringe.

I’ve had two girls now who have produced fresh blood. Both had ultrasounds and X-rays which ruled out bladder stones, sludge and reproductive problems. In both cases, both girls showed no other signs of being unwell and we never did find out what caused the bleeding but they were both prescribed antibiotics for 10 days just in case of infection

As for cost, it really does vary from vet to vet so you’re best to ask them for a quote which they should be happy to give

All the best x
