Hi,

I went to clean out my piggies this morning and there was blood in their cage :( They have a Nero 4 cage and the plastic bit at the top where the food bowl is was covered in blood.

I got them both out and gave them a good look over. Neither of them had blood anywhere on them and I couldn't see any cuts on them.

They ate all their tea last night and this morning I saw them both drinking and eating hay. Most their pellets had gone too so in general they seem fine, they were both bouncing round like normal.

The blood wasn't there at 11 last night and I saw them at 6 this morning so something happened between then but I don't know what..

Any suggestions would be greatly apprecitaced as I'm really worried. I've had to go to work but my bf is going to check them again before he goes to work and he's going to check them at lunch so I'm just hoping they'll be ok.

A few days I did find something in the cage. It's hard to describe but it was hard and yellow, I thought it could be a tooth but I wasn't sure and it could of just come out of the bedding. There was no blood then though and neither of them seemed to be in pain.

Please help if any one can.

hi not sure what the problem may be although a couple of years ago whan i had rats i had the same thing happen. They were perfectly healthy, eating and full of energy not a scratch on them and i never found out the cause sorry i couldnt be more help good luck with your piggys x

Urinary infections can cause blood in the urine - with varying levels of 'dilution' so there may appear to be 'pure' blood, or just 'watered down' blood. The easiest thing to do is keep an eye on them, and if you're worried then call in to your vet for advice. If there are any repeats of bloody patches in the cage, pop each piggie in a plastic carrier for a while on their own until they pee; this may show up if the blood is coming from there.

Could the yellow thing in the cage have been a bladder/kidney stone that had been passed? Suppose the blood would have happened then though.

CCC4 - just had a vision of a guinea pig in a Sainsbury's bag! I know you didn't mean that but my brain just works that way.........

Thanks for your advice. I think it could be a urine infection. I bought them some cranberry juice yesterday and they're loving that so hopefully that will clear it all up.

There was no blood in the cage this morning so fingers crossed.

Liberty, I have just reread my post and yours, and am very amused. :)) It never clicked in my mind when I posted it, but now it has I can't stop smiling and laughing!

zigzag, I hope things clear up quickly for your piggie/s. Have you figured out which pig it is yet? If the cranberry juice doesn't work quickly, then a trip to the vets for antibiotics (ideally Septrin) is advised.

I think it's my brown piggie, Zag, as she was very quiet last night and didn't quite seem herself. Both of them are eating and drinking fine though so it's a bit hard to tell! If I find anymore blood I'll be taking them straight to the vets.

Have you noticed her squeaking whilst weeing / pooping or lifting her bum up in the air? Hopefully the Cranberry Juice will do the trick xx

No both of them have been fine apart from the blood. They seem back to normal now so I dont think it was anything too serious. Luckily as I was sooo scared when I saw all the blood

It could be that one of your piggie's poked herself up the nose with some hay. This happened to my sow and she had a small nose bleed, and then afterwards she was fine.
