Gus&Arlo
Junior Guinea Pig
Hi fellow pig parents,
A couple of months ago I found quite a lot of blood on the floor in my pigs room (they are free roam).
There was no blood on either of them, checked claws, mouths, bellies bums etc. They are both light coloured and I couldn’t find a single drop on either of them.
Took them to the vet who checked everywhere but mostly bladders and kidneys for a UTI or any stones etc. Found nothing, but prescribed them each 3 days of metacam just incase there was something we missed.
Months have passed and now again, today, I’ve found blood on the floor. Both times it’s been in the middle of the room (it’s hard floor so they NEVER wee on the hard floor or in the middle of the room) and it’s claret red, not diluted or like i would expect if it was in urine.
I’m going call the vet as soon as they open, but I’ve checked them over again and pressed around their tummies too to check they don’t show any pain or discomfort in their tummy/bladder area. I really just want to find the source of the bleeding if this is going to keep repeating.
For reference, they are both 3yo boars. They are showing no signs of behavioural change, no weight loss, both eating (this morning have both been out wheeking for breakfast) but I appreciate this often doesn’t signal that all is necessarily well. I feed them a low calcium diet and they get bottled water to try and prevent any calcium build up/stones.
They are prone to the odd squabble, but they’ve never drawn blood and there’s not a mark on either of them. I’m at a loss!
Has anyone experienced bleeding from their pigs? Are boars prone to UTI’s or is this more sows? If they were weeing blood, would the blood be on their bums/bellies? If it was bladder stones, should I not have expected to see more chalky calcium build up in the urine also?
They both have black feet and I assume they’d clean the feet quite easily if they were bleeding so this is my only guess.
