The last couple of days I have been noticing my guinea pigs pee a pinky red colour on the towels. They haven’t been eating red pepper recently so it wouldn’t be from that. Any advice?

If you’re worried please take piggy to the vet when you can. Urine can look red/brown when oxidised.

Others with more experience will be along. In the meantime, could you post a photo?

As Siikibam says pee does oxidise and can go a reddy brown from that. Is it pink when it comes out? If so you need to try and find who is doing the pink wees and pop to a vet as it could be the start of a UTI which should clear quickly with an antibiotic

I’m not sure if it is pink when it comes out however today I left them for about an hour after putting fresh towels down and his wee was pink. I think I know which piggie it is (Baloo) as there was a little bit of a scabby blood on his bottom but I’m not 100% sure. I will try and take them both to the vets to get them checked over however I’m not sure what vets are open near me due to the whole Coronavirus 😬 I’m not quite sure if this has anything to do with it but my other piggie (Gus) seems to have a ulcer in his mouth and his lip has gone a bit red?

oh I wish I could help.
I know it's hard but I think vets are open and you need to see one if possible.
Come on piggies x

Blood has a different specific weight to water/urine and separates out when it dries. In small quantities, it dries as reddish dots in a pee puddle and in large ones as a red ring around a puddle in a different colour.
I'm thinking it may be oxidised urine from the post above by Wiebke to another poster. But if you’re worried then do take them both to the vet, including the one you say has a red lip.

It looks like oxidised pee to me.

Please be aware that blood and urine do not mix. Blood manifests either as reddish dots in an oxidised pee puddle or - rarely and only if there is a real lot of blood in the pee) as a reddish or brown (but not rusty) ring around a differently coloured pee puddle. The puddle itself will develop a ring in the same but darker colour as the inside as it dries. It also becomes rustier the longer it is exposed to air.

I hope that this helps you?
