A few days ago, when I went to put my two boars (Fudge and Smudge) back in their hutch after a few hours in their run, we noticed a little bit of blood in their wooden shelter. Neither of the boys had any sign of injury, no blood on their bums, and both showed no sign of distress. The next morning we noticed a little bit on the straw, but again no sign which piggie it had come from. They spend the day in their hospital cages to see if we could figure out who it was.

This evening, theres a puddle on the floor of their wooden shelter. Still no sign who its from, and I'm worried as one is partially sighted and the other had an abscess at the beginning of last year. We're not sure if one of the boys is weeing this blood or what, any advice on what to do?

I would get them out one at a time and put them on a white towel and give them watery stuff like cucumber, wait til they do a wee and look for signs of pain or discomfort as well as any potential blood in the urine. Hope you get to the bottom of it!

It can be notoriously difficult to find out which piggy is bleeding/has bloody pee (I have been there with a group of twelve and two carriers). Generally, it works best about half to an hour after a veg meal, but some piggy can REALLY hold out. To make matters even trickier, at the very beginning of a UTI (urinary tract infection), not every pee is necessarily bloody - or every red pee contains blood...

I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks.
Smudge point blank refuses to eat cucumber, most likely because we used it to help get his meds into him when he was ill last year. What other watery foods could I give them?

There was a 3 day gap between the blood first appearing, and I checked both the hutch and the run every day in between and came up blank.

Erm you could try peppers or lettuce (avoid red or orange peppers though as might confuse you trying to spot blood). I have also (in times of being short on time and desperate need) syringed some water to them as well to hurry things along

Got a green pepper in the fridge at the moment, I'll try him with that in the morning! Thank you so very much

i'd take them to the vets and have their urine tested. then the vet can have a good feel of their bladders and make sure everything is ok. :)
