So when we went to put the boys in after free ranging yesterday we noticed one of them had gone the toilet on the white tiles that we have around the edges of the room(to stop naughty bunny eating carpet!) there was definately blood in the urine and after pressing some tissue against their privates we found that it was Ordell that had gone(he was still a little wet and it stained the tissue pinky red)

i have an appointment for tuesday for him at the vets(with it being bank holiday tomorrow and me only discovering it yesterday afternoon this is the earliest i could get in) but wondered if anyone knows what could be the cause of it? he is absolutely fine in himself, certianly not off his food or anything like that. i had a feel of his tummy which he was happy for me to do. I'm going to bring them into our room today so i can watch out for him going to the toilet to see if he squeaks whilst going.

i read on the peter gurney site that blood in the urine in boars isnt too good as it can mean kidney stones :( i really hope this isnt the case, ive only had my boys a few weeks :( is there anything i can be doing for him until he gets to the vets? should i be thinking of changing his diet? at the moment they get science selective gp, unlimited hay and green leafy veg(usually spring greens or cabbage) and the occasional parsely and cucumber.

any advice is greatly welcomed.

It's usually either a bladder infection or bladder stones. The former is the most common and is easily treated with an antibiotic (preferably Septrin). The vet might want to x-ray to rule out stones.

Piggies need a variety of vegetables rather than limiting to mostly greens - these are also fairly high in calcium and oxalates that can contribute greatly to bladder stones. Have a read of this page here - http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum...cavys-diet-read-me-nutrition-charts-info.html - it tells you (according to detailed nutrition information) what can be fed daily. Usually it's recommended only to feed things like greens a couple of times a week.

Fingers crossed for the vet on Tuesday.

One of my girls has been exactly the same :( she's on antibiotics now, showed no symptoms of anything being wrong except pink wee, she doesn't squeek whilst weeing or anything else, the vet said it's either cystitis (which i've been told on here it can't be) or a UTI either way its good that you've caught it early, the vet will probly treat him for UTI or cystitis because although not as common, boys can get this, before x-raying for stones, don't worry too much it's more likely to be something small, as long as he's eating he's doing ok. I'd say just make sure he gets plently to eat and lots of water, maybe try syringing a bit to keep his bladder flushed? I'm no expert but i've had some advice on this, i've also heard that natural cranberry juice might help bladder problems but if i were you i'd just leave him as he is and make sure he's eating and drinking ok until the vet see's him. Hope someone with better advice comes along soon. Good luck to the piggy, fingers crossed it's not serious

Thankyou both for the replies.

daftscotslass: i always thought that green leafy veg was the best for them so that list on the link really suprised me. id also always thought that lettuce should only ever be given as a treat but its on the list as safe for every day so another shocker for me! il be going veg shopping for them tomorrow so will get them something different. i have only been giving them cabbage/spring greens about 4 times a week anyway but will still try something different with them. thanks for that!

jnenbnb: I'm sorry your girly isnt too well at the moment either, give her cuddles from me! i figured the vet would probably give anti bs to begin with which makes sense, il just be keeping my fingers firmly crossed that it works! do the anti bs seem to be working for your girl at all?

Ordell has just been out for his free range and he is still fine and went straight for his spring greens when i put him back in the greedy little guy ;D

I don't want to temp fate but i have to say that yes they do seem to be working, she's only on baytril which is supposedly not the best for bladder infections but the vet said that baytril was best to try first as septrin can upset their tummys and there's a chance baytril can work. I found the first pink wee on friday night and she had her 1st dose of baytril saturday morning, i havent seen a pink wee since yesterday. the antibiotics seemed to make her drowsy yesterday and she was a little off her food but today she seems lively and has eaten everything i've given her so things seem to be picking up *touch wood* i know it's only been days so i'm still a bit wary. fingers crossed for your piggie, keep us updated with how he's getting on, hope it's nothing serious!

My piggy was passing bright red blood a couple of months ago, i actually thought something had gotten into his hutch & killed him there was that much.
He was given Baytril & it cleared (eventually) :)  I was also told to keep his fluids up to help flush the infection out & gave him 5mls every 1-2 hours (just water as i couldn't find any unsweetened cranberry juice), this may help Ordell until he gets to the vets

yeah how's the little fella? vets tomorrow, wishing you all the best hun. O0 i think it would be cystitis, bladder infection, or stones as others have said. sending, big comforting hugs and caring thoughts and kisses to you both. :smitten: :smitten: let us know how he gets on.

I'm glad that your girl seems to be doing better Emma, il keep my fingers crossed that it continues to work for her!

I'm also glad baytril cleared up your boys problem Niki-gives me hope for Ordell! i guess with him being male and cystitis being rarer in boys you tend to worry that little bit more but you never know! oh and i did go to syringe him some water earlier but i couldnt find a single syringe*smacks head* shall ask the vet for a couple of spares when I'm there tomorrow and will maybe pick him up some cranberry juice too(such yucky stuff that though! lol)

Thanks for asking after my boy Katiep and cavy love, he is doing just fine today! ;D he didnt pee when he was out and its hard to see any urine in his cage because of the bedding we use but i had a quick look at his pee pee and he was a little wet there and it looked a bit pinky colour so I'm assuming hes still the same bless him.

i will definately update as soon as ive been the vets tomorrow. hes not going to like it at all though, they are just about getting used to us picking them up without more strangers handling him. il just have to give him extra cuddles and yummy veg to make up for it! :smitten:

Thanks :) Don't worry, mine were pretty new when we took them the vets and they seemed terrified but soon got over it with a bit of grass to occupy them! sounds the same as bumble was with the pink wet on her underneath but thats gone now so I'm hoping it's the baytril working :) good luck at the vets and keep us posted, i'm sure you'll have him cleared up in no time! fingers crossed O0

awww glad to hear he's doing alright, well as alright as he can be. good luck at the vets. ((((hugs)))))

Sorry everyone, havent been able to get online properly until now!

Well Ordell has been the vets, the vet had a good feel of his belly/bladder and said that you can usually feel if there are stones? well he said he couldnt feel any stones or grit and that it is most likely cystitis/infection. ive been given baytril and was told to give him 0.8mls once a day. ive decided to cut this into two doses though as with experience from giving rats baytril, twice a day is usually more effective then once. its so much easier giving piggies baytril then ratties! though he likes it just as much as the rats, which means he hates it ;D

so now i just keep an eye on him! oh and i managed to get some 5 ml syringes from the vets to encourage him to drink more and i might pick up some cranberry juice for him when I'm out next. i shall keep you all updated on how he goes! thanks again for all the advice and well wishes :smitten:

Aw glad you've got him sorted out :) Bumble was on less than that and seems better so fingers crossed he makes a full recovery O0
Good luck to you and ordell keep us posted! (and i luv ordells name :) ) x
