For about a year now, maybe longer, Rosie has almost constantly have problems with her urinary system. Last April she had her bladder flushed out. A few months after that she was back to have pain killers and antibiotics (Baytril). Back in January she was back again for more pain killers, antibiotics (sulfatrim and Baytril this time) and an X-ray to rule out stones, which it did. And now today there’s bright red blood in her urine. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong or how to fix this. Nothing seems to be working.

I’m feeling incredibly broken and depressed right now, especially considering I’m very much broke after having to pay out for a new car last week when my old faithful finally gave up the ghost. I feel like mind is racing in circles.

I don’t know how to fix this. She needs to go back to the vets. But I don’t have the money for the vets. But I can’t fix this. And round and round I go.

I don’t know what I expect to get back from posting on here. I know full well you guys can magic it better either. But I just needed to air this somewhere to someone.

So tomorrow she’ll be booked in for the vets and I’ll just have to abracadabra the money up from somewhere.

I am really sorry, some piggies are more prone to bladder issues than others. We had a bladder piggie who was on long term metacam for inflamed bladder lining.
Hopefully this can be shirted again with some AB's.
It all seems to happen at once I am sorry money is tight... Maybe speak to the vets about an installment plan?

Sending little Rosie lots of healing vibes x

Sending you hugs. These things always seem to happen at once. You are doing everything you can for Rosie, you are doing nothing wrong. I hope you can get some answers for Rosie soon. X

What dose sulfatrim did the vet prescribe? So often I am seeing posts where the dose has been really small, and the antibiotic isn't working.

She was given Sulfatrim oral drops. It says on the bottle 16mg/ml + 80mg/ml. I’m not sure what that means. It also says it’s a mixture of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. And she was prescribed 0.4ml to be taken twice daily along with Baytril which I think she was on 0.26ml twice daily.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. And I shall ask about a payment plan. They’ve got to have something in place for difficult situations like this. I’m sure I’m not the first or will be the last.

Thank you for the kind words. It just wears you down after so much time, it starts to feel like there is just no answer. Keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow though.

You won't... it is difficult when things come at once I know....

Please let us know how Rosie gets on x

Has your vet considered whether this may be sterile interstitial cystitis (IC) ?

How much does she weigh?

I’m not sure completely what that is but she was being treated for cyctitis. My vet said that’s why she recommended the sulfatrim because there has been a better success rate using it to treat cystitis as it’s a more specialised antibiotic.

Hiya just caught this thread. Sorry to hear Rosie’s under the weather. I’m sure our vets offers a payment plan as situations like this can be difficult, so yours might too if you ask them. Here’s lots of love, hugs & healing vibes to dear Rosie and you

I'm sorry! I had a bladder pig, Sundae, who had chronic issues, so I have been there too. She ended up on suppressive antibiotics for long-term to cut down on infections. Hang in there and hope she feels better soon!

Thank you. And yes, I’m sure they have. Most places nowadays offer something like that so it should all be okey.

Yes she was X-ray last time she went in in january for stones and the X-rays cake back as negative for any stones or calcium build up.
Where the X-rays done without GA? My vet was saying he’s seen a lot of second opinions where they’ve come with X-ray images done at another practice, that show nothing, but are also very poor quality. He then X-rays after giving a bit of gas, so he can get the guinea pig into the position he needs and there is very clearly a stone that didn’t show on the previous images.

I’m not sure if they used any gas or not but they didn’t heavily sedate her because I asked them not to due to a reaction shes had to sedatives in the past.

Rosie went to vets this morning and they’ve prescribed another course of sulfatrim and Baytril for two weeks. After that if she still has problems she’s got to go back for an ultrasound of her bladder.
