Thank you, I will try that, anything to get her to feel better.

I think that us as pet owners have every right to discuss our thoughts with the vets. My vet kept prescribing Baytril and it wasn't working for Connie. Everytime I asked for Septrin, all they kept saying was that they couldn't get hold of it. I eventually asked if I could just get it myself from a pharmacy. My vet was good though and did some research and finally managed to get me some. They always have Septrin in stock now :)

Connie use to look as though she was trying to push something out and squeak in pain but after 2 x rays, no stones were found so may be Buttercup is still hurting from damage the stone could have caused or she has a bad infection xx

I finally got my vet to give me a prescription for pediatric septrin, so I could go and order it from the pharmacy (which got me a couple of funny looks there when they realised it was for a GUINEA PIG!).

Even paying for the prescription is a lot cheaper than making at least three phone calls and paying £3 bus fare every week plus £1.20 for the septrin, as Nerys' cystitis has come back and is refusing to go down right now. (No bladder trouble; had that checked)

What is Septrin actually for, or why is it used in guinea pigs. If i know the ins and outs of it I might be able to persuade my vet to give it. When I asked she said it was for gut problems and wouldn't help Buttercup. Please give me whatever info you have on it and I will willingly try again. Should it be used in conjunction with anything else i.e. Baytril.

Thanks in advance for your advice, it does help and it is really appreciated.

As far as I am aware, septrin is a better antibiotic for piggies although I don't think it is actually licensed for guinea pigs like Metacam isn't. It has a much more pleasent taste (banana flavor) so theoretically, piggy should take it easier (except for my Eliza who hates syringers). It isn't as harsh as Baytril on pigges tummies. Overall, Septrin is a better antibiotic for UTI's xx

There is a range of different (human) antibiotics being used now, depending on what problem; baytril has its use as well in certain cases.

Baytril is still the only listed antibiotic for guinea pigs, and many vets are reluctant to proscribe anything else. I had to fight for it at my vets.

However it is generally recommended for UTI's. It is not as harsh as baytril and tastes so much better (banana flavour to get it down babies' throats!), so most guinea pigs actually like it!

If necessary, print out for your vet!

Thanks everyone, I will print that info out and see what the vets has to say about it after Buttercup has been re-assessed tomorrow. Keep everything crossed for her in case she needs another op.

I strongly hope not! Keeping my fingers crossed for Buttercup!

I hope not too because if there are still stones there I will be having strong words with the vet.

There is a likelyhood that new stones form within weeks of the operation, which could make a second operation necessary; not your vet's fault - just the very alcaline urine that guinea pigs have!

I don't want to frighten you; only keep monitoring Buttercup.

OK, here we go again. Buttercup went to the vets again today, had an x-ray and they could see a stone, not as big as one of the last ones. They had to anaesthetise her but they couldn't get to the stone because althought it isn't in her bladder it is on the way down but not far enough. There were two options, (a) to leave it and see if it moves down further like the last stones but give her pain relief and antibiotics or (b) flush it back into the bladder which the vet didn't really want to do at this stage. So at the moment we are hoping that Buttercup can pass it as far as possible and then the vet can get it out like the last lot but without making an incision because it is much smaller. The vet has prescribed Septrin instead of Baytril...yay. I did mention it and she said that is what she was going to prescribe anyway so that is a plus. She is also going to be on Metacam and Vetergesic for pain relief. She said we can leave it a week and then give her another xray to see if it has come down further. My dad was supposed to pick Buttercup up at 4pm but can you believe it, they had taken my pet carrier over to their other practice because they didn't know it was mine so I rushed straight from the train home from work and picked Buttercup up at 6.30 pm, just what I needed. Anyhow she is now resting in her house, I have put a few greens in front of her and she has had a few nibbles and I will syringe feed her later tonight to get some food into her. I think this could be a long process, one I am not looking forward to. I can only hope that this stone moves down very quickly and then hope that there are no more, they cannot see any stones in her bladder.

I will keep you all updated with Buttercup's progress, she is a little lady with attitude and a fighter and I will do everything I can to keep her as healthy as possible to get her through this.

Is she on Vetergesic or Vetagesic, there is a big difference between them?

Poor Buttercup. Thats good you have her home and that she is eating. You are truly a wonderful piggy mummy with all the care you are giving her. She couldnt be in better hands . Sending healing wheeks from me and my piggies.

I am very sorry about the bad news! You must feel quite down.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for poor Buttercup!

"It's Vetergesic she is on."

I looked up Vetergesic on Google and it said that is only available as an injection and that it is a sedative type drug, that is why I wondered what she was taking. Can you please give us more information?

Hi, Obviously I am not an expert but they did say it was a morphine type based painkiller which could make her drowsy. They did actually write on the bottle and tell me it was ok to give it orally, I did question that. When she has taken it I must say she has been fine with it and it did seem to work better than the Metacam. I am afraid I cannot give more info than that. They have said I can use the Metacam with the Vetergesic. Fingers crossed she has been great tonight, she has had some grass and some other greens and I have syringe fed her some Science Recovery, she's not eating to her full capacity by no means but bearing in mind she has had an anaesthetic today I didn't expect her to eat as much as she has.
