Blood in urine UPDATE

Buttercup went back to the vets yesterday as her condition hadn't really improved. The vet upped the dose of Bayril to 0.4ml twice per day and also gave her an injection of another antibiotic. She then said to bring Buttercup back on Monday/Tuesday if there was no improvement and they would do an x-ray. I have phoned the emergency vet just now to get Buttercup in first thing in the morning for an x-ray and then op if she has a stone. She seems to have more blood in her urine now and although she is still eating a bit and drinking she does seem a bit quieter, I am really worried now that they won't be able to save her. I feel so sorry for her when she has a wee and is squeaking, I try and comfort her and she gives me lots of licks, I am not sure who is comforting who. I feel so so sorry for her and am practically sitting here crying because there doesn't seem to be anything I can do to help her. If they have to do an op and things look too bad is it best to let her go? It's not that I want her to go but I don't want her to have to suffer either.

I am praying it isn't a stone but then if it isn't that and the bleeding is getting worse it could be something far worse. Sorry if I am rambling on, I am really really worried about her now, I really thought we could beat this with antibiotics.

My Minx has made it through two bladder stone operations; even though an operation sounds bad, they ARE survivable! Just to give you a moral boost in these bad hours; it somehow always happens over a weekend to prolong the torture...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Neve and you on Monday!

Thanks Vicky, it really is appreciated, I really do pray and hope she will be ok, I think I always seem to think the worst. It's nice to know that your little piggy has come through two ops.

I'm sorry that you are going throught such a time of it. Its so worrying when our piggies are ill and I hope the x-ray helps get to the bottom of Buttercups painful wees. It may just be a stubborn UTI or if it is a bladder stone then remember that these can be removed or if its not too big then it may be possible for Buttercup to pass this without the need for surgery. I will be thinking of you and Buttercup tomorrow. Post as soon as you have an update..

I have been more than once through what you are going through now, and found the not-knowing before a possible op and then again during the op the hardest. Even when I lost a piggie after an operation, at least I knew that I had tried my best for her; it was easier to cope with, as I could DO things and at least I knew where I stood (heartbreaking as it was!).

Just this Easter, I had the same wait with my Llewelyn, when a first quick x-ray had shown a white blob on Good Friday and I needed to wait over a LONG weeked until Tuesday for another x-ray-cum-possible-op. Thankfully, the stone didn't materialise. But it wasn't exactly happy Easter, as I was worried sick!

I am sorry that Buttercup hasn't improved. Please do try not to worry even though I know it is hard. I too have been in the position you are in now and it is worrying. It could just be a stubborn UTI. Have you asked your vet for Septrin as this is a better antibiotic for UTI's. Like Vicky T has said, although the operation is scary, it can also be successful. The question about if you should let Buttercup go, I think that you should give her a chance if you can. Good luck at the vets tomorrow and please keep us updated xx

A Buscopan tablet crushed and mixed with water and syringe-fed will ease any bladder discomfort. It is not a pain-killer but it does ease muscle cramps which cause the pain.
Paediatric Septrin is the optimum anti-biotic for a UTI, the dose is 0.5ml, twice daily for 10-14 days.
Unlimited amounts of pure cranberry juice will also help to reduce any discomfort.

Thanks everyone for your kind words, it does mean a lot.

I did ask the vet yesterday about Septrin and she said they use it for gut problems rather than this sort of problem. I will see how things go tomorrow with the x-ray and if she needs an op. I will push for the Septrin if need be.

Fingers crossed everyone.
