My 6 year old piggie has started passing blood in her urine since Christmas eve. I am taking her to the vets today but it is not the best vet piggie vet as it's Boxing Day ( in my experience this is often not worth the trip!). She has no history of UTI's and had an op for bladder stones 2 years ago which was very successful. Is there a possibility she could get a UTI and how do you get a urine sample from a guinea pig? Her abdomen is quite swollen since yesterday so I am fearing something more serious. I would not put her through surgery again as she is 6 and already has a gut issue which she is on Metacam and cisipride for. I think the Metacam is helping her at the mo as she is not wheeking when she pees as she did before the op. Any thoughts or advise ?

Uti's are caused by bacteria getting into the bladder so yes it is entirely possible. Especially when you consider piggies have such short legs and her lady parts are on the ground. My piggies have been good and wee'd on the table when they have had uti's and the vets been examining them. I would see what this vet says, most likely they will give an antibiotic and pain relief and if she doesn't pick up in a few days you can go to your usual vet. At this stage, especially if she is able to wee and poop normally, there is no reason to think she needs any scans or ops

Thank you for the advice. There was quite red blood yesterday morning that really worried me , not just a tinge in her urine as she has had before. Not sure if that is usual with UTI's but I will see what the vet has to say.

I've had mixed experiences from nothing visible in the urine to quite dark so it can be hard to say. You are doing the right thing by going to the vet. Hope she starts to feel better soon

Please let us know how they get on at the vets, hopefully a UTI that a course of septrin will clear up

Hello quick update . Fruitie improved a little but I took her to the vets anyway. He thinks it is ovarian cysts and that it had burst!:( Luckily she was on metacam anyway for a gut issue and amazingly she has really improved. No blood at all and eating for England. That pig is a surviver!:D
