My guniea pig is 6 days after bladder stone flushing. Today i seen he has blood in his urine. He squeaks when he wee’s and makes a noise when pooping. His on mectam and baytril. Could it be an uti, another stone or medication causing it. I'm so worried:(

Hi! Please contact your vet promptly.

It is a bit early for another stone although if there is an imbalance in the calcium absorption process, they can re-form quickly. But it could have dislodged stones sitting further up than the bladder (kidney/ureters). It could also be an infection; only an examination will show.

All the best!

Thank you everyone!
Henry went to the vet today been checked over! He has cystitis which can be treatable ! His on 0,5 on mectam and 0.8 ml on baytril twice daily . Is 0.8 of baytril safe for guniea pig dosage

Hi! Yes, that is the standard dosage for a 1 kg guinea pig with urinary tract problems. Please split the dose and give 0.4 ml twice daily. Do the same with the metacam. Guinea pigs have a very fast metabolism, which is why they profit from getting their medicines every 12 hours. They also need higher dosages compared to cats or dogs of comparable weight.

I would recommend to give a pinch of probiotics either 1-2 hours before or after the antibiotic. Additionally or alternatively you can syringe poo soup, made by soaking very fresh poos from a healthy companion that have ideally laid in a little water and then syringing the water. If poo soup is really fresh, and each time freshly made, it is more effective than probiotics. It mimics natural behaviour. This is to bolster the bacteria and microbes in the gut that the baytril can also affect.
Give the metacam first (nice tasting) before the baytril (horrible tasting), then follow it all up with ribena/fruit concentrate to wash away the taste. You give as much ribena as baytril.

Administering Medications And Syringe Feed

Weigh daily at the same time and step in with syringe feed if the baytril is causing major loss of appetite. Contact your vet and ask whether they would consider switching to sulfatrim(UK)/bactrim(US) instead.
