My piggies were having sofa time when Princess, who is approx 2 years old, weed on the blanket. It was like blood and there was quite a lot. She seems well and happy in herself and was happliy tucking into orange pepper and baby corn just prior to this. I've had a look in her hutch and there are a couple of spots in the bedding, only a bit thou, whereas tonight it seemedcto be an awful lot. There was the urine patch and a couple of other patches where she had wiped her bottom. She didn't squeal or show any discomfort. Any advice please?

The only advice I can give it to get Princess to the vet ASAP. Hopefully someone who knows more about this subject will come along soon.

It could be one of a few things but you need to get her to the vets as she's more than likely going to need antibiotics regardless of what she has. It could be bladder stones, a bladder infection of some form ( UTI or maybe even cystitis ) etc If it's a bladder infection I have personally found septrin to be the best antibiotic to use and my vet normally prescribes metacam as well with it being an anti-inflammatory and it provides pain relief. A sample of her urine should be taken to check for crystals which can be a sign of bladder stones, if the vet suspects bladder stones an x-ray should be able to confirm if it's the case or not and then you can decide on the best course of action to take

Good luck, please let us know how you get on

Any sign of blood in urine and you should get her to the vet straight away. It could be anything from a bladder infection to stones to kidney problems or worse so the quicker she sees someone the better! Fingers crossed for her.

Blood in urine when it's fresh is almost pink in colour - did it look like this? It turns a borwnish colour when it dries but you should know right away when it's blood. did she make any noises when she peed as if it was difficult for her to pass urine? These are all other symptoms of something wrong with her bladder.

Best of luck and fingers crossed. Please let us know how she gets on :(

Really sorry to hear about Princess..... :...
how is she today, have you got an appointment at the vets? blood in urine is something that your vet needs to see her about... this needs to be looked at as soon as possible.. aka now

HEALING WHEEEKS FOR PRINCESS XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Weeeelllll, we haven't been to the vet. My OH has kept an eye on her all day and as soon as I came home from work I got her out and sat her in a plastic tray to try to collect a sample. She has had 2 wees in there, both as clear as anything! Even on white kitchen paper.

So I'm wondering if someone had caught a nail or something and Princess just happened to wee where there was some blood, therefore making it look like it was in her urine.

Her feet are ok so I'll inspect the babies after tea. Rest assured, I'll be keeping a very close eye on things tonight and over the next few days to be sure. Bit of an odd one but it seems that she is ok (and wondering why I'm making such a fuss of her!).

Thanks for all the advice last night though. X

Fingers crossed it was just a caught nail. Keep an eye on her drinking if she is drinking more than normal it can be a sign of a UTI x

Could she have eaten fruit or veg earlier that day or the day before that would have caused discolouration in the urine?

Hopefully there is some simple explaination; but do keep a close eye on her for a few days just in case.

She had eaten orange pepper but only while she was on the sofa. Thinking of the other blood spots on the rug, I'm sure one of them had caught a nail or something.

Thanks though, all advice appreciated as I came into piggie ownership through default (took on school's gp) and am fairly new and inexperienced. X
