Carrot our boar has just been to the vets after I noticed blood in the piggies litter tray. On closer inspection it was apparent it was coming from Carrot's penis and was fresh bright red blood. No squeaking or indication that he wasn't feeling well. Seemed to bleeding when he weed.

Rang the vets straight away and got an appointment twenty minutes later. Vet felt for bladder stones and said he couldn't feel any.

Carrot was given an injection of metacam and now has a five day course. I am hoping that this will help him and he wont need any other medication or antibiotics.

Just glad that we spotted it early but am worried as I know that a sick guinea pig can go down hill rapidly and have as very upset little girl, who is worried for her piggy. Any idea what this could be as the vet didn't really say?

Our other boar is fine.

My Peronel had the same symptoms and it was cysitis. After a week of medication she was fine. I hope little carrot is better soon.

thanks piggy fan. the vet did mention that it could be cystitis. I have bought some cranberry juice as well, so hopefully that will help him. Just feel sorry for him, although he is still tucking into his hay and veggies like the greedy thing he is!

Just feeling the bladder is not conclusive; only an x-ray can rule out bladder stones.

UTIs (urinary tract infections) are quite frequent in guinea pigs. They need antibiotic treatment for at least 2-3 weeks. I haven't found that cranberry juice is really working all that much. Please weigh your boy daily and take him back asap if he deteriorates. Make sure that you always ask for a probiotic to give with any antibiotic; it is vital for guinea pig to keep the guts going.

Thank you Wiebke

He hasn't been prescribed any antibiotics just metacam for five days. Does he need antibiotics? It seemed odd to me that he wasn't given any.

I took him to a local vet as I couldn't get over to the recommended guinea pig one so I don't know how knowledgeable he is.
