Hello,

we've just had Jericho and Big E out on a mattress protector, I noticed Jericho starting moaning when going to the toilet, now poo and diluted blood came out so we wasn't sure if he was urinating at the same time, he's done this a few more time, each time sort of crying, I think it's his urine because just before we put him back in he cried again and this time it was just wet with pink.

I asked my son to called the PDSA straight away and tried to explain what was happening, he said she didn't seem to be listening. They booked him for 12 pm tomorrow, which I'm not really happy about... So I've asked my son to watch if he eats/drinks when he gives them veg, if he doesn't eat he'll call back. He seems to be ok in himself, he's still biting everything and moaning at Big E lol.

It is most likely the beginning of a UTI (urinary tract infection). All the best with your appointment tomorrow. Please ask for some metacam (painkiller/anti-inflammatory) in conjunction with the antibiotic. Make sure that you have got a probiotic at home. If in doubt, ask for an x-ray or have an x-ray done if the symptoms persist after several days on treatment or come back.

Ok will do, I'll write it down for my son as he's taking Jericho. They do usually prescribe pain killers as well as antibiotics if needed.

I have some probiotics :)

Thanks @Wiebke :)

Oh and he is eating. He is pretty much acting normal apart from the crying :(

It doesn't sound too serious then, yet. Switch to weighing him daily at the same time in the feeding cycle, as with any ill piggy.

I wish you all the best of luck. I can only suggest arming your lad with some names of some of the other antibiotics out there, in case he is prescribed Baytril, as Baytril is not the best for bladder issues, but is a good all-round antibiotic in itself.
I suspect going on my own experience that the vet will prescribe some kind of antibiotic before offering an x-ray if his condition doesn't clear up.
I'll be thinking of him xx

Ok thanks, I'll write that down as well. I was looking at the guinea lynx site and it said "UTIs are generally treated with a safe and effective antibiotic like Bactrim (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) for two or more weeks." Is that just the same sort of stuff @Wiebke ?

I know how you feel, I've lost 5 this year (3 elderly and 2 young) it's awful! You aren't a bad piggy mum at all! I'm at the vets tomorrow too (hopefully, calling first thing in the morning) with possible fungal. It's always one thing after another!

Just an update... and I'm slightly annoyed.

So I give my son a note to take to the vet and he doesn't give it to her!! Then because as usual she's flapping on about the client agreement and everything else, she confuses him, so then when I ask him what's going on he doesn't know, so I had to call the PDSA and this is what I was more or less told.

That she decided that there was blood spotting when he poo'd and I think she said it's a urine infection so she gave him a 24 hour injection of metacam, and wouldn't give him the antibiotics because we need to renew our agreement which only ran out yesterday! No one even told my son that when we booked him in. She's also given him Baytril and when I mentioned about it apparently not being very effective with UTI's, she just went on about how the woman prescribing it has a lot of knowledge blah blah blah so I said, if it doesn't work will the vet then try something else, she said yes.. it's only a 10 day course... It doesn't even look like they've prescribed any more metacam after today.... I did mention that as well and the receptionist said the injection should help blah blah blah. I think I'm going to have to make sure it's not this vet again, she confused Aidan the last flaming time as well.

I really wish there was a more knowledgeable vet in Nottingham.. or that I could drive and take him to Derby... feel very annoyed and sad for Jericho.

Can @Wiebke or anyone else please advise?

Jericho was taken to the PDSA where a bit of wrong info was given, I had initially typed out a note for my son to take and give to the vet but he never gave it to her, which I was pretty annoyed about because on that it explained everything the vet needed to know, plus telling her it was bright red blood when actually it was diluted so she assumed it was from his bottom.

Anyway, when he went to pick up the meds, he wasn't given any painkiller for the poor lad, just Baytril which we have to give him at 0.25 once a day, we have started to give him avipro plus as well.

I've noticed different things:

1. He doesn't seem to be drinking, the water level on the bottle is fuller than usual and I've not spotted him drinking.

2. I've not seen him eat hay or pellets, but I have seen him down his veg, in fact he was standing on the side of the cage when I walked in with it.

3. He's not crying in pain (I've not heard him)

4. We took him out of the cage with Big E and let him run around on a mattress pad on the floor to see if he had blood in his urine, but we didn't see any, will check again later. His poo looks smaller?

5. He does seem to fluff himself up atm, I know they do that anyway, but this is sort of different to what he usually does.

6. The vet noticed Jericho has/had a saw bottom so gave us some wash for it.

Do we need to start hand feeding him and if so how much water/food should he get per feed with him eating veg? Is there anything else we need to do with him apart from weigh him and give probiotics?

I've not slept at all well and got up at 6 just to give him veg just so he could have some water.

He's not very good at being hand fed, he gags on the baytril and bites the syringe.. proper bites it as well! He tried to pull it off my son from what I could make out and that was when my son was giving him probiotics!

Thanks in advance

I'm sorry to hear the vets aren't really getting on top of this Kerrie, sending more healing vibes!

Thanks @Flutterby

I think it was more of a mix up in what she was told when asking questions, plus I did explain to the receptionist about the blood being in his urine rather than when he pooped.. but she seemed a bit dim anyway.

I guess it's hard when you can't get there yourself. He's in good hands with you though, I know you'll get to the bottom of it!

It's actually my son that looks after the guinea's :) He's brilliant with them, hand feeds them, gives meds, cleans their bottoms, clips their claws, checks their teeth and so on, he's a lot more calmer than I am so the guinea's seem to be a bit more relaxed with him. I tend to look after the dog when he has problems, he gets ear infections, it's me that cleans his ears and put his meds in etc. he seems to be a bit funny with others doing it, he does growl at me but hey oh.

Well I'll keep my eye on him and see how he does, if he doesn't seem any better by the weekend then I think it'll be a phone call to book him in again. I'll see if I can go this time although I'll have to go via taxi. Going to get my son to weigh him when he's up.

I just want to see what Wiebke advises, to be fair, he's only had his second dose of Baytril yesterday.
