Just about to take Stewie to the out of hours vets as he’s started bleeding post-neuter (neutered yesterday morning). He seems to be squeaking a little when he’s trying to wee or poo. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this before? Wound site looks clean. I can’t tell where the blood is coming from at this point.

i have had this one week post neuter this year with Lewis and he had xrays to rule out stones,he had an ear infection and urine infection.we had two weeks of septrin.but you need to check the wound from the neutered site, ensure that there isnt any oozing wounds, stitches that are open, raised areas that are hot to touch, this can sometimes indicate abscesses.if in doubt i would advise you go to your vet.hope your piggie heals well.xx

Thank you very much for your reply Eileen. We’ve just left the vet who checked him over. He said the wound is clean and dry and doesn’t feel hot. He said the blood seems watery so he thinks he may have cystitis. I’ve left him with the vet overnight who’s going to start him on Baytril until he can be assessed by the exotic vet in the morning (sadly no exotic vet out of hours) x

I have seen this in post nuterd boars, and sows ,
Surgery/anasthesia causes pigs and evey other animals body to respond with adreanocortical (spelling ?)hormones to help the body respond to the physical stress ,
Though bleeding cannot be ignored, as other causes are also possible! personaly when this type of bleeding happens l "always" show my vet!

Thank you Gizzy. The vet mentioned stress too :) so fingers crossed it’s just something minor :)

Good that you have had him seen. It is hopefully just a stress response to the operation/drugs.
I hope that it settles down again!

Only just saw your post. Good to see you got him back to the vet. Hope he feels better soon

Thank you @VickiA. I had a call from the vets this morning. She said he hasn’t passed anymore blood and she’s happy with how he is in himself so we can pick him up this afternoon :)

Great news indeed. They do so worry us. Little Holly has very recently been recovering from a spay. She took it upon herself to remove her stitches. I was worried sick but she was just fine.
He’ll be glad to be back home with you later.

Oh my goodness! Little tinker. I’m glad she’s ok :) x

A bit of advice. When you bring your guinea pig home from the vets following post-op bleeding and you keep him on puppy pads to monitor... don’t feed him red pepper! :mal: :))

:)) The number of times I've been caught out by things like this. I put towels down in the kitchen to make it less slippy when they run around. The latest worrying culprit was rainbow chard (with the red stalks). Instant pink piggy pee and instant slave worrier lol
