Hi one of my guineas has been losing weight gradually for a few months & had several trips to the vets, treatment for uti, cystaid & metacam & now the vet (piggy v experienced) is suggesting blood tests. He is otherwise well & I want to do all I can but wondered how they cope with blood being taken .I think she's checking for kidney problems .thanks.

Hi there
For weight loss the first port of call should be a Poo analysis, has this been done?
Also for the UTI has he done any type of Wee analysis?

I say this because taking bloods from a Piggie is not only invasive but also quite expensive

If your vet is an exotics vet experienced with piggies then I would go with their advice.

Any other symptoms apart from weight loss? Have you had X rays done to rule out stones & dental problems? UTI symptoms that are not clearing up plus weight loss could add up to stones. Are you hand feeding to boost weight? Has vet tried pain relief to see if it's a pain issue causing your guinea not to eat well?

I have had blood taken from 2 of my guineas at different times. Yes, sending off the bloods for analysis is fairly pricey but it was necessary for my guineas. They both were ok with it, both had GA for X rays, dental & bloods to be done all at once. Full session of these xrays & tests & consultation with exotics vet around £200 - £250 I think but prices vary so do check with your vets on cost.

Hope your guinea will be ok.
