I noticed a couple of spots of blood in my piggy’s cage. I’ve made an appointment at the vets for tomorrow evening but the amount of blood is increasing and now I’m stressing. He’s absolutely fine in himself and squeaking for his dinner so I’m hoping it’s nothing too major (?UTI, he’s started squeaking in pain a little now). Typically these things always seem to happen on a Sunday evening now my vets are closed. They do have an out of hours service but they never have an exotic vet working. I’m thinking of keeping an eye on him this evening and getting him in at the vets ASAP tomorrow unless things get worse tonight.

Hi and welcome!

Please take a deep breath and calm down!

Very red coloured pees are typical for the onset of a bacterial urine infection (UTI) or a cystitis, which is a Non-bacterial inflammation of the bladder walls (all bladder problem issues tend to present with pretty much the same symptoms). The red is actually porphyrine and not blood, which is generally invisible until even in larger concentrations.
Blood in the urine doesn't mix (they have a different specific weight) and dries either as red spots in the middle of a pee or - if there is a real lot- as a red ring around a differently coloured pee puddle. There is no sign of any amount of blood in the puddle in your picture. ;)

Your boy will keep until tomorrow for an appointment during regular opening hours. :tu:

Hi @Wiebke. Thank you so much for your reply, I’m a little calmer now :)
Amongst the bigger patches there are a couple with a little spot in the middle (bottom left of picture). Could this be blood or porphyrine? Sounds like he’ll be prescribed some antibiotics then and hopefully back to normal in no time :)

Hi! At this initial stage some pees contain a little blood and others don't, but you do not have to fear that your boy is going to bleed to death overnight! An antibiotic and some metacam to help with pain and any inflammation should hopefully sort it. ;)

If you are experiencing soft poos or appetite issues, please add a pinch of probiotics or offer 'poo soup' made with totally fresh poos from a healthy companion. Soak them in a little water and syringe straight away. This mimics natural behaviour and is the more effective the fresher the poos - even more than a probiotic at its freshest. You give the probiotic either 1 hour before or 1-2 hours after the antibiotic.

Oh good, because that’s exactly what I was worried about haha. They sure know how to worry us! Thank you for the information about probiotics and poo soup (rather him than me!) and thanks again for your replies. This forum is invaluable :)

Hi there. Just an update. Leo started dragging his man parts around the cage and nibbling himself a little last night as though something was irritating him. We checked him and his man parts out but no sign of anything. I kept getting a strong waft of urine every now and again too. We went to the vets this evening and he had a sperm rod sticking out at that point so the vet removed that. He said he could feel some thickening so he’s given us some metacam for possible cystitis and told us to see how he goes and if no improvement in a week he’ll probably want to X-ray him to check for stones. He still seems perfectly fine in himself though.

Good that you have had him seen! Sperm rods are not pleasant, but they can happen.
Have a look at our boar care guide: Boar Care: Bits, Bums & Baths

All the best for his potential urinary issues.

Thanks again @Wiebke for the information and peeling me off the ceiling lol.

@Skypipdot yuk and really long lol. A part of me likes them a teeny tiny bit though cuz I like squeezing spots and blackheads and seeing how long these things are makes my mouth water a little haha
