Bloody new year fireworks! Stay safe piggies!

Its not even 8pm and some bloody idiot is setting of fireworks that sound like a war started! Please everyone keep your piggies and other pets safe tonight and make sure they have extra hideys and blankets to keep out the scary noises! Poor Ollie pigwig is terrified of fireworks and he was just enjoying some extended playpen time but now he's going to go home with extra fleecy hideys to stay safe :(
 
They are setting them off around us too! There have been quite a few already. Our piggies are inside and seem to be ok. They aren’t near any external walls/doors so hopefully they will be mostly oblivious. It’s the children they’ve set off though! They’ve heard them and won’t go to sleep now! 😤 Hope all the outside piggies are safely snuggled up!
 
We haven’t had any yet, my boys aren’t usually bothered by them but we still take the precautions like putting the tv on louder (it’s a sound they’re very very used to by now) etc
 
We have them here as well now, not too close to be a problem yet. I've put new baby Nugget's cage in the middle of my bed ready to cover him with the duvet if we get any near by.
 
Mad Piggle and even madder Tallulah both get quite excited about fireworks but Ollie gets very scared and Jezzy floof almost wouldnt come out from under the castle house for dinner :(
Luckily the noise abated for long enough that everypig got plenty of red peppers and cucumber and hay and now all the curtains and blinds are shut and there are extra hidey houses and deep hay in both cages so no pig ends up stuck out in the open if there are scary loud noises!
 
I'm glad to say my girls don't really take much notice, they just sleep in their shed :zzz: if I put the cctv on they might stop chewing their hay for few seconds at a bang, or do their little rumbly judder then go back to sleep :D
Orca doesn't hear much of it as she's completely sparked out when sleeping, I think the other 3 take their lead from her as the mother figure & are comforted by her complete disregard for them :wub:

The dog however is a drooling wreck by 00.01hrs! 😞
If I'm in bed she wakes me & if I'm up she keeps nudging, pawing & resting her head or leaning on me :(
Cue sad Sam eyes & cute handlebar ears, bless her 35kg of jelly!
I hate fireworks- some baffoon let off the mother of them last year at midnight, my home shook with the vibration & I had been asleep. There's no need for them, I was livid. (yes I am a bah humbug too :)) ) x
 
I think I am going to strategically start my last load of piggy laundry at 11pm so the washing machine noise drowns out the firework sounds for Ollie, poor chap was a nervous wreck for days after bonfire night, he doesnt like the washing machine noise either but at least its normal and happens at least 12 times a week just for piggy laundry!

I'm extremely lucky that none of my animals are bothered by them. With the exception of our new little lady..I have no idea how Thistle will react yet, her last experience of fireworks was out in an unprotected shed with no door, looking directly out over the town setting them off. She has plenty of hay, hiding places, and my usual chattering to them. Thankfully so far they have been very quiet and far away. She's already on baytril for her chronic respiratory issues so if she does freak out enough to lower her immune system, she's already covered, so thats at least one less thing to worry about. But she's come a long way in the short time she's been here, i'm quietly confident she will be ok, I'm hoping having the others around her not reacting will help her settle.
 
At midnight we had a beautiful display from the back window all across south Bristol, far enough away not to be noisy. The neighbours across the road who had visitors and are known 3 or 4 times a year for their over the top extremely noisy fireworks didn't let theirs off until 00.30 when we'd taken the duvet off the new baby because we thought it was all over. :hb: He's eaten his veggies so he can't have been too traumatised.

I find it annoying people let off fireworks in heavily populated residential areas. I mean just why 🤷🏻‍♀️. There must be so many people who have dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs...

It's so selfish of them 😡
 
Well some buttonhead(s) let off their almighty BANG fireworks again last night, the dog was a quivering wreck :(
I'm sure my near neighbours probably think I'm a grumpy, crazy woman.... Shouting 'TOSSERS!' out of my patio door at twit-twoo o'clock at fireworks! Made me feel better ;)
I live in quite a rural area where there's loads of fields & wildlife, but there's also a lot of domestic pets & old people.
I'm sure it must frighten some of the residents to death. Horses, cattle & sheep have no protection from these idiotic people's mindless actions!
I'm all for wishing people a happy new year, but it is possible to do it quietly & still enjoy themselves, causing minimal disruption & distress to others - animal or human!
Should have put this in the rant thread!

None of mine were really bothered by anything last night. The piggies have never been fussed. The dog barked at the first couple but it's before we had the TV on. A couple of times he lifted his head from sleeping but thought better of it and went back to sleep when he realised we were sat there unbothered by it :))
 
Yes actually nothing too loud here at midnight, I slept through it anyway and Ollie seems quite perky this morning- I think the "loud" family in the street (the same ones who have Christmas lights on their house to rival Blackpool illuminations) had done their fireworks early on for the kids!
 
Happy New Year all! They were also setting them off around teatime here. But then the noise we had at midnight...usually Primrose and Stanley aren't particularly fussed by fireworks but this time it sounded like World War 3. They froze for quite a while so I chatted to them until it was over and they thought they were safe enough to start nibbling their hay again. I like looking at fireworks but I hate the massive bangers they have now; it all seems to be about who can make the loudest bangs rather than the visual display. I much preferred the more varied if maybe lower-powered set of Standard Fireworks we used to have instead of the barrage that gets set off these days ( :fog: ) And whilst I'm ranting (start the new year as you mean to go on!), when did fireworks become so central to people's New Years celebrations at home anyway? I'm not THAT old and yet I remember fireworks were only ever used on 5th November and that was about it.

I'm with you on all of that! I too, have found myself sitting alongside my guinea pig hutch many times in the back garden in the cold and the dark late at night, talking to my pigs to try and calm them. It usually goes something like this...


"Hey girls, you're fine, don't worry, it's just the STUPID INCONSIDERATE NEIGHBOURS NEXT DOOR who don't think of anyone else except themselves. But I love you and I'll always keep you safe"
 
They were being let off right near our house last night, right next to the pigs and rats, but they weren't bothered luckily
