So, since summer has begun here in NC my albino Guinea Pig, Bernadette has gained a sore on her head.. At first it wasn't too awfully big and I had begun putting rose bud salve on her head. It seems to help but if I stop applying the bump continues to get bigger. It an open sore and there's a lot of blood.. I'm not sure what to do. The bump appeared on her little hair split at the top of her head. She's in a cage with another guinea pig Penelope. I'm sure it is not contagious because it has been a few months now and Penelope has no sores.. There's also a ton of gnats that hang in their cage so I've started cleaning it out more often. I have even hung up fly strips to catch them but there's so many. Any tips on the sore and gnats would be extremely appreciated!

Please have your piggy seen by a vet as soon as possible for treatment of this sore. Obviously it is getting worse and needs vet intervention.

Hi!

Please see a vet for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment as soon as you can after the weekend!

It sounds like an infected sore, cyst or tumor that is at an acute risk of septicemia. This is NOT a case for a little home DIY; it will only get worse the longer you wait! :(

The risk of getting fly strike (flesh eating maggots) will also grow with an open wound attracting them.
Please get some mosquito netting for the cage to prevent fly strike.

I have been wanting to go to the vet, but I've recently lost my job and I'm only 17. I can't really afford a vet bill and it's making me really upset..

Ring around your local vets and ask if they can do a payment plan?

I know you're trying to do your best but if you don't get her to the vet you could lose her, Please us know how you get on

What about your parents will they or a friend lend you money. You could always make a payment plan, to pay the money back.

Sorry I wouldn't have a clue. Maybe you can speak to the vet, explain what's wrong, & can she give you a rough estimate on price.
