So my guinea pig cookie was fine till i noticed today, and my guinea pig Cookie has like a blue tinge around a bit of his lips. Is this ussuall for guinea pigs?

no, it's not usual. any other signs of illness? it could be to do with his circulation/heart as someone else said. ches had very pale membranes when he was anaemic. and everytime he was ill. he couldn't maintain his temperature very well. maisie was the same with her last illness aswell. she needed a heatpad to help her.

best get the vet to check him over.

That was my first thought too when I read this, heart related. I think it's definitely worth a vets visit!

Blue lips can certainly be a symptom of a heart issue as the poor circulation means blood can't pump to the extremities. Does he have any other symptoms such as:

Laboured or rapid breathing
Nodding when breathing
Random coughing especially while eating
Hooting followed by a cough (duck type noise)
Abdominal bloating
Low weight or failure to gain weight
Bumblefoot
Recurrent respiratory infections

I know he has had a few health issues before, please can you remind me what they were? How old is he again and what is his current weight?

He will need a vet visit definitely.

I think his breathing does sound different a bit then ussuall its hard to tell. he is around 9 months now. Havent weighed him too.

We can't go to the vet as my mum works and i'm going on holiday on Saturday for 2 weeks. I've not weighed him yet I'm going to do that in a few minits.

Am sorry but if his breathing is not the same as normal he needs checking by a vet. Who is looking after Cookie while you are away?

A heart condition is possilble in a young pig, I know of one diagnosed at 6 months old.

My older brother is looking after cookie when i'm away,I just weighed cookie and he was 974 grams.

That's a good weight, do you know if he has lost at all?

Is he eating and pooing ok?

I know this is very difficult for you as you have to rely on your mum but Cookie really needs to see a vet. He has been unwell for months now. I suspect he has heart problems and this needs medication. Could you ask your mum to read this thread? Vets are open Saturday and working should not mean cookie does not get the help he needs.

He is eating fine and pooing.

@piggyfan I know but Saturday we are leaving early for our flight like 8am to get to the airport as i'm going on holiday for 2 weeks and my mum works full time doesn't get home till 8:00-8:30pm My vet is open Mon-Fri 9am-7pm Sat- 9am-5pm. Sun-10:30am-3:30pm

does your mum have time during her lunch break? is there any other family member or friend who could go with you in your mums place? or could your brother take him?

Call your vet now... if your mum can't drive you there maybe your dad or brother could?
My brother is 17,My dad lives in Holland because of his job and i'm in the uk.
its 9:53pm so I don't think I would be able to call the vet at that time.

Yes I am sure he is old enough! If he doesn't have a car already then you should take your mums car...
thinking about it we don't really need a car as the vet is like 15-20 mins walk. (it treats all pets don't know if it specialises In exotic pets but its the only vet around in my area.).

great that it's so close. you could even get a taxi if it came to it. shouldn't cost too much if it's close by. you and your brother could go down tomorrow.

That is good. Will your brother take Cookie tomorrow?[/QUOTE ]
He didn't exactly give me an awnser he just said "he has plans" which I think means he might be going to his friends tomorrow. I'm 15 could I go by myself if it was ok with my mum. Can you go to the vets when your 15 as long as you have adults permission by yourself or do you have to have a adult with you at the vets.

@Gizi Wow. I only have the one that's 15-20 mins walk and then my pet store one (which is 30 mins drive and anyway i tend to think pet store vets give out wrong information)

@biscandmatt I know :)

Good luck. Please let us know how you get on.
thanks hopefully the vets aren't booked up with appoitments and Hopefully he doesn't get worse overnight. (like his cage mate oreo did like in march as he had something (not sure what) and then passed the next day we were going to go to the vets that weekend but it was too late. I guess he hid it too well to the latest stages)
