Hi
One of my guinea pigs, Panda, has had a tumor and we had to have her put down. This leaves Polar on her own and not wanting her to be alone we agreed to take a new guinea pig, a boar. He was with one of my friends and they don't want a single guinea pig so they gave him to me. He is about 4/5 years and Polar is only 1. My mum didnt want a boar as they smell. Does anyone have any last minute advice about any of this?

Absolutely do not put them together unless the boar is neutered - you didn't say if he was. If not, it can be easily enough done but will require some aftercare and you can put them together after 6 weeks. Well done for sorting out a friend for your wee one, and imo, boars don't smell any more than ladies. They sometimes will mark a new place with smells but this happened much less with mine as they got older and anyway will only last (to our noses) for a few minutes. It's not an unpleasant smell, just a guinea piggy one, and I kinda think their pee smells less than sows'. As long as you do a poo sweep daily they won't smell the room out at all.

Also, very sorry to hear about Panda, hope you are OK.

I am so sorry to hear about Panda. You will need to have the boar neutered if he has not already been done and wait 6 weeks before putting them together.
Behaviour, Bonding & Bereavement Guides

All the guides in this link are very helpful, I have used them for 8 bondings and have only had one failure. Good Luck.

Hi I am so sorry for your loss. I have 2 boars and I can honestly say they do not smell. When I have people round I ask them if they can smell them as I am extremely paranoid about this lol and everyone always says that they cant smell anything and I know this is them not being polite as my husband’s family are straight to the point hee hee.

I have two boars Bill and Ted and they are very clean and don’t smell anymore than the girls I have had previously x

That's good to hear. I would love to see some photos of them when he has settled. We all love piggie pigtures on the forum.

There is a smell mum is complaining about but that is the bedding (not using that again!)
The black one is the boar (Blizzard)
