Boar Advice

I'm hopefully getting a rescue boar, Alfie, from summerleaze to be friends with Charlie if it all works out.

Will they be ok if their hutch and run is next to the girls? Will i need to move just the run away?

And also Charlie's hair was all stuck in his bits today. Do i need to trim his hair?

I've never had boars before so any advice is appreciated whatever it is.

I have got my two boars in a hutch at right angles with the hutch my two girls are in. The girls are set back slightly so neither can really see each other. I was more concerned about the boys getting a 'whiff' of the girls and having behaviour probs. I always sort the boys first and have separate everythings! I only have one run, so the boys go in first, then the girls, and I try and move it around the lawn quite a bit. Hopefully will have another run for next year. I had never had boars before, but they are great so far. Good Luck. xx

if he is long haired i would trim round his botty - mine are long haired and always trim short to stop this problem happening and stops wee and poo getting all tangled in it.

i cannot see a problem with their house being next to the girls. they may rumble alot and be interested in them, but there cannot be much harm in being close to eachother!

I think sometimes it depends on the pigs - I know people who happily keep boar pairs close to females and have never had problems, yet took in a pair last year who fell out very badly after getting a sniff of the girls, so it seems to go either way. It's really hard to predict with these boys isn't it!

I used to try and keep boys so their accommodation was not near the girls - but I've given up now and they just have to get on with it! Touch wood, mine seem fairly settled. I guess if you've got an unsettled pair or a new pair then it might help if they can't smell girly pigs!

They do sometimes get hair stuck in their bits - careful trimming will help (blunt ended scissors, just in case )

Yes, it does depend on the boars rolleyes.

In my opinion, while you are bonding the boars, I would keep them totally away from the girlies run and hutch.

Also give Charlie a quick trim and perhaps a bath so that all his scent is removed before Alfie arrives. And introduce them on neutral territory with lots of distractions.
