Hi I really need some advice on what to do next. I have 2 brother piggies that are now 5 months old. They live in a large double tiered hutch and have a large 2m x 1m grass run. They got on fine until about 3 weeks ago when they got into a fight and the smaller one (Cookie) got injured with a cut lip and a bite on his foot which turned into an abscess. So we seperated them for a few days but we had to go on holiday as Cookie was on medicine we took them with us. They were in a small c n c cage and they got on fine!
We got back 2 days ago and seemed ok back in normal hutch. However yesterday we found the bigger one (Fudge) with a bite on his nose 😔 so we have seperated them again. So upset by this as i do think they are friends but they both won't back down. What do i do next? Have read all the info about bonding etc just really sad that they may have to be seperated for good.

Hi and welcome!

Unfortunately your boys are currently at the age where their testosterone output is at an all time high. Moving boys during that time can be extremely tricky as every move comes with a renewed group establishment and hierarchy sort-out. Dealing with two boarsonalities that are subject to massive hormone spike and at that age to higher general hormone level is tricky; it doesn't take much extra stress to derail an already pressured delicate bond.

Unfortunately what people buying babies are not looking for is which two boys are hanging out together most and are therefore much more likely to make it together but they usually go for cute appeal. Key to any successful piggy bond is mutual liking and character compatibility with the latter doubly important for any teenage boys. :(

You may find these guides here helpful; they deal with teenage and practical boar life aspects. They also deal in detail with your various options on how to move on. There is not one solution that fits all - it depends on space, access to good rescues or vets etc. A lot depends on where you are and what you can access.

Thanks I am in the u.k, Staffordshire. I have now put them in the run on grass with a separating grid for now.

Lucky you! Good rescue and good neutering vet access in your general area, so you have basically the full range of potential options on where to go with your boys from here. Don't rush, but take your time to research your options and think them through. They have all their various pros and cons. We are here to help you with further information/advice/recommendations if wished.

The Potteries Guinea Pig Rescue is in this case within your easy reach for rescue dating under expert supervision (so you come home with a fully quarantined/vet cared/healthy and properly sexed companion only if acceptance has happened and hve the support of the rescue if you run into real trouble at any time during the adopted boars life). The rescue can also help you with vet recommendations as to which vet
neuters their own incoming single boars, so you have an experienced neutering vet within a reasonable distance, too.
