image.webp Hi everyone. Sadly my precious guinea pig Rumple left us to go to rainbow bridge on Wednesday last week , he was 6 1/2 . He left behind his brother and loyal companion Jasper who seems a bit withdrawn and out of sorts since he lost Rumple. He is also 6 1/2 years old and although healthy he is quite frail compared to his youthful chubby self. Basically I'm wondering if Jasper would like a new friend yet or is he too set in his ways to accept anyone new. Or would the whole situation of boar dating stress him out too much . Ideally I thought an older boy for him to retire with . Any thought folks? Thanks .... he just seems down in the dumps without Rumple. I've attached a photo of Jasper looking fed up just now!

He's he's very cute :)! I'm sorry to hear about Rumple :(.

I would lean more towards rebonding, if you want to keep having guinea pigs after Jasper. They don't necessarily need to be a similar age but he may be happier with a guinea pig past the difficult stage (teenage months). For example, my boar Oreo ended up being a single pig at 5 and a bit and at around 5 and a half he has now been rebonded with an 18 month old boar, Pemba. It's been a few months and they are very happy together. They have no problems and are equally matched. Having a younger pig has really made Oreo more active and playful so he does seem a lot more energetic than when he was younger, which is lovely to watch.

Anyway, if Jasper isn't coping well on his own now, then he certainly won't get better on his own. If I compare Oreo from when he was on his own to how he was after bringing him home again from the rescue with Pemba, I can see he is so much happier.

I would keep an eye on Jasper to make sure he doesn't lose any weight and syringe feed if necessary.

Aww I'm sure he'd love a new friend to keep him youthful!

I am very sorry for your loss! Jasper is a gorgeous boy.
Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig

It is never too late for company! I have just taken on a friend's 8 year old lady after the loss of her last same age companion at the beginning of this yea because she became depressed.

Is there a way to get in contact with North East Guinea Pig Rescue in Southshields/Newcastle? They have a scheme for bereaved guinea pigs. NEGPR Home Page

Otherwise would it be possible to consider having Jasper living alongside two younger guinea pigs with interaction through the grids (they can be either two sows or two boars), so he has got the stimulation he needs? That is what I have been doing with Calli after she was a bit too fear-aggressive with any of my other cantankerous single old ladies for successful bond to come off - but they give each other company through the bars. Nothing like being best foes through the bars to keep the juices flowing... :D

We are really sorry for your loss. Unfortunately we dont know of any rescue that does boar dating in Scotland. We had to travel to North East Guinea Pig Rescue to find friends for our two older single boars. Meantime you should follow the guide posted by @Wiebke on how to best look after Jasper at this time.

Depending where you are it would be well worth the trip to a reputable rescue to find Jasper a new buddy.

Lisa & Ali..x
