I'm new to this guys so bear with me.

I collected Gubbins (very recently neutered boar) and Beryl (5.5 year old sow) from Honeybunnies at the weekend. They've been placed in a C&C cage, separated down the middle, until Gubbins is firing blanks :))

Gubbins is spending a fair amount of time making eyes at Beryl. He's chirrping at her, wiggling his bottom, wheeking etc. Am I being really unfair to him by keeping them so close to each other? Will his 'urges' die down a bit as his hormone levels decrease or is this perfectly normal piggie behaviour? Beryl comes over to say 'hi' but soon gets bored with him and toddles off to the far corner of her enclosure.

I put them side by side because they will eventually be in the same cage and I thought they should get to know one another.

Opinions please ................ :)

Nope, you are doing the right thing! I have my neutered boar next to my sows (they get introduced tonight after nearly 6 weeks apart!).

He might calm down a little bit, however my boar has been rumblestrutting and wheeking since day one!

It's just kinder to set them see eachother and be close to eachother. I had my boar in a room by himself at first, he never came out and was terrified. Brought him in next to the girls and he was completely different, taking food from my hand, popcorning etc. Even piggies that don't like living with their own kind often appreciate a 'next door neighbour'. Makes them feel safe :))

i think keep them next to each other! i dont think his urges will go completely when his seed runs out, i just think he'll be the same! so your sow needs to get used to that. i think she'll have him wrapped around her little paw, and what girl doesn't love that?

No you are doing the right thing - "fruity" behaviour is a regular occurrence, although it should calm down somewhat once your sows has had her first few seasons.

Living next to each other gives them time to get used to each other and become friends; and neither feels alone. By the time you join them, they will be already well on the way to being a bonded pair.

Thank you very much for your helpful replies. Gubbins really does seem to love Beryl - but at 5.5 she's probably too old to be bothered with him :)). Beryl let me stroke her head without running away tonight so we're making progress in the 'human/piggie' bonding process. Gubbins is happy to wander around whilst I'm sat next to the cage but he scarpers if you move too fast. I never knew piggies could be so entertaining - they're just the sweetest little things everx).
