honey

can anyone advise - I was told that a boar piggie had a gland which fills with pus - the treatment was to wipe with antisceptic once an abscess has grown and burst. The piggie is kept at a city farm - is this treatment right for an old piggie kept in a stable with flies?

I think so -- the manager said he was too old to be castrated and this regularly occurred...

Hmmm, I don't have a clue I shall leave this to the experts Sorry! It doesn't sound as if this wee boar is kept in the best conditions, who's guinea pig is it?

The piggie belongs to a Bristol city farm, i offered to home him while he recovered but no take up. I am taking my pigs to the vet this eve (another story!) so will ask them. Thank you will post update later

The back end of a male pig is well suppllied with sebaceous glands which can occasionally produce a lot of sebum, this is normal.
The outlets of the scent glands can sometimes get blocked so the glands become swollen. When the pressure releases the "scent" it produces a very distinctive smell!
It is possible that this is happening to him.
In the meantime I think he needs to be "rescued" possibly on a very long-term basis.

Agreed - his living conditions do not sound good!

I would suspect it is also possible for the grease gland to get infected. If the area swells and the bursts leaving a hole, the same as an abscess, then it's probably infected. Otherwise, as AP said - an active grease gland that simply needs cleansing once or twice a month!

Honey said scent gland to which I answered, not grease gland.

maybe it would be worth contacting fi cantillon who runs the cavyrescueandretreat in bristol she maybe be able to go visit and consult on the living conditions of the piggies at the farm?

Thanks for pointing that out, AP. I read "boar gland" and assumed it meant the grease gland!

Where are the scent glands usually found?

Honey can you give me a ring on 0845 6435359 and let me have the details on the city farm that this boy is at. i would be happy to contact them and advise on living conditions and if they would like the boy removed we can arrange that. I can not state what is happening to the boy as I don't have experience in that area.

That is if they want to accept my offer of help.
