Morning all

(Soory for the long post........)
As you may know about 5 weeks one of my boars had a bladder stone removed.
Friday we returned to the vets as he was hunching when pooping and the poops were larger than normal. The vet said it was a bowel infection, and gave me 5 days of Septrin.
Saturday we went to the emergency vet as he wasn't pooping or weeing nearly as much as normal, and had gone off his food. The emergency vet agreed with the other vet, and gave us Metacam.
Yesterday he was still off his food, and I was feeding him probiotics, Critical Care and Excel nugget 'soup' (& dandelions and grass, basically anything he wanted).
This morning, he has been pooping and weeing better, but he has passed a stone (oval, about 3 mm x 5 mm), and now his wee keeps dribbling and is a horrible brown colour.
I think I know what you're all going to say, but, do I take him back to the vet again?

I believe stones can form again very quickly so I would consider asking the vet for some Cystease which helps line the bladder and ward off any nasty bugs etc. There are other treatments and some members are far more experienced with bladder piggies than I am (I had a boar with a huge stone surgically removed last July so understand how worrying this condition is)
He has Cystease (cat capsules) quarter of a 125mg tablet daily and unsweetened cranberry juice and a low calcium diet - no issues now for 10 months :) I read last week that raw beetroot is good for neutralising calcium so my piggies have it twice a week.
I think it is Flintstones on here who has lots of advice on this so maybe contact her but in the meantime, I would ring the vet for further advice and see if they need you to take your little one back in.
The brownish wee could be trauma to the bladder/urethra from his previous surgery but it has been 5 weeks so better be safe than sorry.
Keep us updated please and hope your boy is better very soon - sending lots of healing vibes :laluot_29:

Thank you

He has improved immensely since I posted previously, his wee is now a lot clearer (but still dribbling), he has come out of his hidey-hole and is eating loads :-)

He has been on a very low calcium diet since the op, even to the point of bottled water (Volvic has lowest calcium levels FYI)

I will order some cystease to try

Thank you

owch, poor guy i bet that hurt, maybe he has some infection or just soreness? i think some stones are quite rough round the edges?

I think i would have another trip to the vets just to be on the safe side, if he has scratched inside it could get infected?

Good luck and hope your boy is ok.

Bless him. I hope he feels better soon. I would pop him to the vets sometime this week to have a check over, and maybe even a conscious xray to check there are no more stones in there. Keep an eye on the dribbling of urine, as his urethra has been stretched he may have some damage to the sphincter which stops urine just dribbling out. It may heal with time. But make sure you keep him super clean as urine can cause scolding and sores.

Healing vibes for your little guy.

x.

Ouch is all I can say, is how you are going to prevent stone formation in the future.

Abi is right, a conscious Xray is a good way to go to ensure he does not have anymore stone's present. I would love to tell you I give this and it's a miracle cure, my Patrick is no longer on any medicine the only thing I do is flush his bladder everyday with fluids he get's 90ml's everyday and so far so good - we're 8 weeks since his operation and no further problems *knock's wood*.

Maybe a good idea to get him on Antibiotics, to stop secondary infection.

I'm glad it's getting clearer and brown wee will usually mean blood. I wonder if the stone was blocking the urine from coming out and now it's just the excess which was in his urethra coming out.
Best to at least call the vet and see what they say though, just to be on the safe side

I think that Septrin is an antibiotic so you should be ok on that front, but again the vet can advise on whether the course needs to be extended. It sounds to me like the brown stuff is blood, but this could have been caused by the passing of the stone (scratches). Another vet trip I think!

Where are you, are you happy with your vet? We have a number of good cavy savvy vets who we can recommend if you need another opinion.

Please have him checked by a vet. I would put him on septrin to prevent any infection from potential damage to bladde and urethra walls.

Cystease/cystaid (a prescription free bladder lining food supplement for cats that is available on the internet) could help with minimising damage to the bladder. One of my interstitial cystitis piggies has been on it for nearly two years with good results.

Barley water is another option.

Here are more links to what you could do to prevent an reoccurrence. Sadly, it is not all that rare for another stone to form soon after. http://www.guinealynx.info/stones.html

Thanks all.
He is already on septrin, so I shall ask to extend the course to 3 weeks.
All the dribbling has stopped, and he is eating like there's no tomorrow.
He's pooping and weeing normally now too.

So sorry your p[oor boy has had a stone pass - they do hurt.Hope you get him sorted

Oh the poor little guy :...
Sounds like you're on top of things with the septrin, hope the vets give him a once over and say all is ok!

Getting better :-)

Well, the little piggie is eating and weeing and pooping normally now :-)

Next trick, is to try and get the vets to extend his septrin course.
He had to be "a little gassed" to have his last X-rays, so I don't really want to go through that again :-(

His current diet
  • Timothy hay (no alfalfa)
  • Volvic in 2 water bottles
  • Volvic in water bowl
  • Dried green oat
  • Pets at Home probiotic (the only one I could get at the weekend)
  • Septrin (0.7ml, twicde daily)
  • Metacam (2kg dose, once a day)
He seems to have gone off his veggies though (except baby corn and dwarf beans) - any hints or tips to get him eating them again?

Thank you
