I have a 6/7 year old entire boar who is having impactation issues. It has now got to the point where it is almost daily that I have to help him and clean him, his fur and generally himself always seems to smell, even though he is bathed regularly and very pampered.
Is there something I can give so that he can pass it more naturally?

I’ve had a few older boars like this and as long as you remove it all in one go, I’ve not noticed that they’re too smelly. Why oh why, do I always forget to put gloves on when I remove it, as the smell doesn’t seem to wash off your hands. Maybe that’s why I don’t think the piggy smells, as I smell just as bad! Haha

I’ve also found probiotic helps reduce impaction. I put two bottles on the cage. One with added probiotic and one without, in case they don’t like the one with. Generally the one with added probiotic is emptied first though, as they seem to love the taste.

Hi!

Here is our impaction care guide, including diet advice and videos. Sadly in advanced cases you need to do the job up to several times a day.
A very regular limited high fibre diet and some probiotics can help because what is getting stuck are the caecotrophs, the poos that piggies eat for a second run through the guts to get as much nutrition out of their main source of food, hay.
