My boy Lando is an uneutered 3year old, he lost his friend (2.5 year old uneutered male) 2 weeks ago. He has always needed another Guinea pig around to bring him out of his shell. So I got him to rescue to try and bond with male safe to say this did not go well, he now has 3 wounds and is on antibiotics to aid the healing.

I feel stuck and don’t know where to go next as I wasn’t pleased with where he was being bonded with the new pig (very small pet store cage) at the rescue so don’t really want to go back there.

I would like some advice on whether I should try him with a younger male, or wait to see if I can find a male more his age.

Just feeling stuck

I am very sorry for both your loss and you trying to do your best for your bereaved boy. The bonding just sounds wrong and the bonder inexperienced with not being able to read the body language of a fear-aggressive piggy in order to abort sooner.
Unfortunately, anybody can call themselves a rescue, and the results are accordingly. :(

It may be best to try your boy with a baby boar. Please be aware that this is not a full guarantee for success if there is no character match but your boy won't be as wary of a baby as of an adult boar. Wait until the bite wounds have healed and his bad experience has settled down a bit. If not yet, please make sure that you have your boy seen by a vet if the area feels to the touch and infected. You may prefer to ask for an antibiotic now.

An alternative (if you have the space but prefer not consider neutering) could be to look for a single older or bereaved sow or a couple of bonded young sows as a living alongside companionship with full interaction through the bars, as long as you secure the divider and adjoining grids with cable ties and also make sure that he cannot climb or jump over with placing a covering over his side along the divider. Boars can be surprisingly persistent and athletic when a sow is in season.

Please take deep calming breath, look after your injured boy and take the time to think things through and make enquiries.

Welcome to the forum and I am very sorry for your loss.
It’s brilliant that you are trying to meet the needs of Lando and sorry it didn’t work out.
@Betsy used to live in Southampton and may know a good rescue who will do a better job of bonding.

As @Wiebkesays a baby boar is probably the best option but another possibility would be to have Lando neutered and bond him with one or 2 sows.

Hope things work out well for you

No rescues I'm Southampton that I can recommend. There is a good one in Dorset. Mandy's Rescue a Guinea Pig. I've rescued 3 piggies from there and the rescue is excellent. They are on FB. Can't link in on this device.

I’m sorry to read about your situation and the terrible wounds Llando has from the failed bonding.
Several lovely experienced forum members have recently paired their single males with a baby boar which in each case has been a great success

Good luck and take care as you grieve your lost boy

I was lucky enough to find a baby boy after Sir George lost his companion. The bonding was extremely boring. 6 weeks in and they are very close, Sir George is thriving being a dad and role model to Mr Bob.
@exia has also recently bonded an older boys with a baby.20260519_211126.webpIMG-20260601-WA0003.webp

I bonded Harry 5 y/o with Ben 5 weeks old this week. Harry who has had a single household with a neighbour the last 8 months is very very excited to share house. Ben is his baby and he adores his little baby a bit too much.

I know how it feels to be stuck in this piggie-boand-thing. Harrys neighbour Kongo was a unbondable guy. We tried to bond him to live with three different boys but it just didn't work out. He was a very nice neighbour, though. Wanted to share some gossip over some food at the divider but needed his space alone.
Its hard to bond grown up boars. Sometimes it just works (had that luck with other boys), and sometimes it doesnt. To bond a grown up/older teen with a baby is so much easier. Done it twice and it ended real good (well, now Harry and Ben are very much newly bonded...). Our plan is to neuter Ben so we can get him a wife in the same age the day Harry is not around anymore.

Who's your daddy, little Bob?

I’m so sorry for your loss and failed bonding.

I’m sure Lando will love being an uncle pig to a young boy.

I found my recent boy on pets for homes. He was the result of someone getting two sows but one was already pregnant. ☹️

It was a very easy bonding. I always leave them in the bonding pen overnight. Good luck.

Hi everyone thank you so much for your reply’s, Lando has healed up well. I have decided to get him neutered and find him girlfriend more this age.
So can spend the rest of his life with a lovely girl.

Hi

All the best. If you haven't access to a rescue that allows dating, then - as much as it pains me - a baby wifelet is generally fail-safe bonding that very often ends with a life-long love affair even with boars with social issues or deficiencies. You have better recourse from a pet shop than from a for sale breeder, as much as it pains me to say.

Here is just one example (of several) from my own piggies in the wake of a failed neutered boar bonding (I've used wifelets for both failed boar-boar or boar-adult sow bondings) as my last resort.

3 years old ex-breeder who used to live in a bare 3 ft square box Carwyn 'Blessed Love' with his little 5 weeks old rescue born wifelet Heini 'Lively', who had to quite literally teach him how to run because he'd never had the space to do zoomies.
