Hi, in a couple of weeks I'm going to be seperating out 4 baby boars into 2 pairs. They will live in my son's room in the correct recommended size cages, stacked. I've been reading that boars can be quite smelly. How smelly is the room likely to get? A bit concerned that my son will be stunk out!
I clean the cage daily and I am aware of cleaning the scent gland.
 
boars do scent mark and they can get a bit whiffy when they are hormonal!
But dont be tempted to over clean when it comes to boars - don’t clean put the cage fully every day as this will make the problem worse - the more you clean boars, the more they will feel the need to scent mark their territories. Spot clean poops out daily, and do a full cage clean once or twice a week. It can also help to leave soiled bedding in the cage at each full cage clean - this can make them still see the territory as their own and reduce their need to scent mark. It can also help with teen boars as it can cause the dominant to overly assert his dominance with each cage clean, if they still see it as their own territory.

For most young boars you won’t need to do much other than check for stray hay and hairs in the anal sac.
 
My boars don’t ‘stink’ in the sense that it’s a really bad smell, it’s more of a underlying smell that can sometimes be stronger than at other times. I poo pick every day and swap out pee pads (we are on fleece) every two to three days then a full clean out once a week.
 
I can't say it's a noticeable problem for us with 2 neutered boars. Their enclosure is in the corner of the dining room and unless you get down there and sniff some week old fleece before I do a clean out more often than not it's the hay we can smell. As said don't take out all the bedding- I leave some old hay in the hay boxes and just make sure I get rid of the wet stuff...
 
Oh and only one of mine is entire, the other is neutered which might make a difference.
