Boar Weight?

I weighed the pigs today and found out that Quinn has been putting on lots of weight - he is 1035g :xd:

Kasper is only 851g. He has only put on 51g since November. Is this normal?

They are both 10 months old.
 
I have boars that are all shapes and sizes, my young ones are all different, they range from 700g to 1kg I would not worry, as long as he is gaining and eating normally he should be fine, i have a 9yr old that is only 700g, this is normal for him, my biggest is 1kg28g. kasper looks like my wally and they are the same weight, my wally is just over a year old.

Thank you :) They both eat plenty and are very rarely not munching on hay so everything must be fine. Just need a little reassurance every now and then!
 
Adult weights and sizes can vary a lot! Some piggies will always stay quite small and stop growing earlier; that is why weight charts are pretty much useless with piggies. As long as Kaspar has a good "heft" with not too much or too little fat on his ribs, you need not worry. It's just the way he is!

My youngest piggy Papi (Welsh for poppy) is the same age as Kaspar and has a very similar weight. I doubt that she will grow much bigger; she's always been tiny. I would like to see her reach 900g eventually before she is 15 months old, but at over 800g, she is actually within the acceptable range of adult weights. Most adult piggies will weigh between 900-1300g; that is the average, but a piggy can weigh anything between 800g to 1800g and still be considered health depending on the individual body size. I have several piggies which I have adopted as adults that are around 800g and perfectly fine and healthy.

PS: I also have a pair of litter sistera, who were 150g apart in weight when I rehomed them at 10 months old, and at times the difference in weight would be a full 400g! It was actually the smaller of the girls which ran the group when she was younger. ;)

He's kinda skinny for a pig if you get what I mean but his face is gradually filling out so I'm waiting on the rest of him following! I'm glad you say that the weight charts are useless! Hoping your Papi manages to make 900g :D
 
Papi is very wedge shaped - her head and chest are every small while her bum is normal sized. That is why I assume that she has rather reached her limit.

You could try to feed them apart from each other for a week to see whether that makes a difference, just to be on the safe side. Weigh at the beginning and at the end.

My Enoch is 18 months old and he weighs 1163g as does Emma who is roughly the same age. Erika however who is also around the same age weighs a whopping 1455g which is huge for a sow but she is also a long piggy so all in proportion.
Eliza is 6.5 years old and is a steady 930g although she has lost some weight as she has aged but all my pigs have had health checks and are considered healthy weights :)
 
Boys , like any piggy can vary in weight and some breeds tend to be larger than others. My rex boys are much bigger than the others but not much heavier. I have had boys ranging from 900g to 1500g. Some have been very petite and slim, others like Hamish are a big lump! Suilven was a big lad at 1350g regularly but dinky Donald was very slim and only ever between 900g and 1kg.

Weighing regularly and knowing what's normal for your piggy is more important than the actual weight although over 1800g is probably getting a bit heavy and may need diet consideration... My rex boys took a long time to reach their adult weight of around 1200g. They really only stabilised at around 18 months of age so your boys possibly still have a bit of growing and bulking up to do...
 
They were at the vets in November and all was fine. I haven't noticed anything odd so I guess it's just a waiting game to see what size they get to :D

I will be trying @Wiebke suggestion starting from their dinner time tonight.
 
My 4 boars not all with us anymore have ranged from 900-1400g :-) I have a 7 month old too but ill reweigh him for progress as hes chunking up quite nicely on his petite frame :D
 
As you know with our foster piggies at the moment we have 12 boars in our house. We are weighing them weekly and we have a range of 850 gms to 1300 gms (Uno). Our oldest boy Wallace weight has over the last year gone from 1200 gms to 1150 gms but we put this down to his age. You also need to remember that Kasper had major surgery earlier last year and this may have put him slightly behind Quinn but as he is still a youngster he will more than likely catch up. :agr: with Wiebke that it might be a good idea to feed them separately for a while just to see if it's Quinn who is the greedy beggar :D

Males vary in shape and size my smallest male is 900g but he is proportion and eats well so I'm not overly worried and had my vet check him for heart problems. She feels he is just a runt and smaller. His brother however is 1320g so big difference. My biggest piggy is a whooping 1600g but he is a big boy. I agree with Lisaali he went through a lot last year so it will put him behind. I would keep an eye on how much he is eating, make sure he is getting enough. I sometimes give my smaller boy extras as a treat. He loves baby corn :)

My pigs, present and past weighed between 750-1350g.
Edward who is around 6months is just under 900g, my smallest pig I have had was Rosie who at her lowest was 740g she lived until she was 7.5 :)

Kasper has gained around 18g! It hasn't even been a week yet :nod: I have noticed that he has been running around more over the past week weeks so it seems like he is almost fully recovered from the op last year! Hope this continues.

Wish I could lose weight as quickly as he puts it on hahaha!
