I apologise in advance this has probably been covered before. I recently adopted a boar, never had one before - we've always kept girls. Albert (as he's now called) is going to be neutered tomorrow. He went for his pre-op tonight and the vet commented that he was a bit on the small size. Now I realise pigs come in all shapes and sizes but Albert is about 6-7mths and weighs in at 680g. Is this an average size or is he a small boy/ smalll for his age. As a note he doesnt eat veggies/greenstuff at all. Thanks

Archie was around 870g at 7 weeks. He was very small when I got him though. Took ages for him to start putting on weight. He is the heaviest of my 3 now :)). I think he was probably the weight of your boy when he was 5 months ish if I recall correctly. I also had the veggie problem with Archie to begin with...he just didn't understand what veggies were (he was pet shop ")) Hope the op goes well for your boy! I'm sure he'll be fine and will start putting weight on soon. Keep trying him with the veg, he may get the idea soon.

Hope this helps

I would say Albert is very small at 6-7 months and 680g.

Have you been weighing him since you have had him to see if he has been gaining steady weight? Are you sure of his age?
One of my boars Finlay is 14 weeks old tomorrow and weighes 810g, he still feels and looks tiny compared to his cage mate Minty who is a few years old and weighes in at 1400g. Finlay was your Albert's weight at 11 weeks old.

We took him in as an unwanted (monday) so his history isn't certain. I've only weighed him once. The vet did remark that he was a small boy but they were happy to operate on him.

I would probably hold fire on the castration front...

If you've had him less than a week and he's a picky eater as you already stated I'd be more interested in making sure he was healthy and keeping check on his weight and general health for the next few weeks...

A couple weeks isn't too long to wait to make sure he's well...
And he will have put on weight and be alot safer for the g.a.

I've always been under the impression 700g was the safe weight for ops...

Well we've had Albert now for 10 days. The operation and post op check went well, everything is healing nicely. I weighed him again today and he's gained 40g he's now 720g. A small step in the right direction. I still cant get him to eat any veggies though just the occasional carrot baton.

An update on Albert's weight - he has gained 102g in 3 weeks. He's doing really well. He's been introduced to Midge (neutered sow) what a happy boy he was ! and he's now eating grass. :))
