I'm sorry if I posted this on the wrong place I'm new to this and don't really know where to post it so if I have posted it under the wrong category feel free to change it ( if you can even do that, sorry I don't know as I'm new here! )

So 5 days ago I got my boar Guinea pig gizmo and he is 11 weeks old. He was alone and desperately needed a home so I took him in. For the last 5 days he has been my best friend and I love him so much. At the moment he has a 80cm cage and that came with him and I know that it is not big enough but I have no choice for now. I really want to upgrade him to a c&c cage what are you opinions on that ?

He started squeaking yesterday and I gave him some food as I thought he might be hungry. I give him his vegetables on a routine as I want him to get used to it so I only gave him nuggets. He stopped squeaking for a little while then he started again ? Why is he doing this ? How can I make him stop? I'm really worried about him. I love him so much already !

Hi and welcome!

Please upgrade to a larger cage; that cage should not even house a hamster! :(

Your little one is desperate for company; ideally of his own kind, so he is shouting for attention. Youngsters are very vocal and dramatic anyway! If you could plan for a mate for him when you upgrade the cage, that would be the biggest gift you could make him. Guinea pigs are group animals and not wired to live on their own.

I agree about the cage. I would of never bought that cage in the first place but I have to use it for now as that is what he came in when I adopted him. I can only find plastic cubes for the c&c cage I will build him would they be ok? It would be a huge cage so done sorry about ventilation.

How would I bond boars together? I have never done or seen it happen so I'm not really sure what I would do ? He's a long hair Abyssinian cross so would his cage mate have to be the same breed. My parents are adamant I won't get another Guinea pig. If it comes to it I could just say all I want for Christmas is anothe Guinea pig and make them feel bad! Is Christmas to long for him to wait? I guess it's better than never ?

If I were you, I'd spend a bit of time reading the links Wiebke has posted . There is a lot of valuable information in them for new owners.

Would you be able to talk to your parents and explain why guinea pigs need company of their own kind ? Would they read this thread ...

Companionship

.... if you showed it to them ?

I use the plastic coated grids. They work great for me.I agree he needs company.I have a boy that was on his own for twelve months before I took him on.A castration and a few months on and he has a friend, little Milo, my youngest boy.Heathcliffe was performing like mad.It brought tears to my eyes to see him so happy. He has never performed before.

Just want to say for the record that boars don't need to be neutered to live with other boars.

So should I go ahead and order the plastic grids? I'm thinking about using the cage he came in when I adopted him as a little tray when grids all around it. I'm thinking probably like a 3 X 6 ? I have the space so I might aswell make it as big as I can ? I would put loads of toys in there to fill up the space ? Or should I go smaller ? What do you think ?

I don't know anywhere I can go to get him neutered though ...

I would go as big as possible. It means you can sit in it with him and there is room for another if you can persuade your parents.

Welcome to the Forum.
I agree with @madguinealady - the bigger you can make his cage the better, and if you look in the thread on C&C cages you will get lots of great ideas.
Lots of people have used their too small starter cage as a litter tray or hay box in their new, bigger cages so this is a great idea.

Where in the UK (roughly) are you located.
There are lots of rescues around, and some of them would offer to take your boy in and 'date' him with other lonely pigs to help find a friend for him.
They do all the work, and you will get a well matched pair back.

But if I bonded him with another boar would he fight with him ? How to I bond them sucsesfully ?

You are right - boars sometimes don't get on and it is important to find a compatible companion.
If you are near a rescue on our rescue locator , it would be worth contacting them .A lot of rescues offer a bonding service as part of their rehoming .

Have you looked at the housing thread all sorts of set ups there.mpeople are even making out cages out of bookcases.

The best way to bond guinea pigs is to set them in a large pen indoors set in some toys but make sure there are 2+ entrances so If they end up fighting in the toy they will be able to leave the fight. leave them in there for at least 3 hours before putting them back in the cage. Remember that teeth chattering, nipping, nudging, climbing over each other and fighting is completely normal in introductions. When you see the piggies fight do not stop it or feel sorry for the bullied one because it normal but if this goes on and blood is drawn then have a towel ready to place on top of the two piggies to stop fights then you know to separate them. If they are separated it is possible to introduce them again after many months. I would suggest getting another piggie for wee gizmo and will be a great present for him and he will absolutely love a wee friend! It might be unluckly for bloody fights to happen for two young guinea pigs or a young and an old one!

Hope I helped!:)

Hi there and hope you are finding lots of useful information on the forum. The best people to find a guinea pig friend for your own piggy are to be found at one of the forum Recommended Rescues( find the link at the bottom of the page). Find your nearest one and phone them to see if they have any single boars looking for a companion and if you can take your boy to them to be introduced. Those that offer introductions are experts in understanding the body language of the guinea pigs and will sometimes be able to offer your own piggy a choice of friends so he can choose for himself. Some rescues might have second hand C&C set-ups for sale too. Good luck with your search:tu:

This may be a way to bond Guinea Pigs - but really do have to stress the value of investing in a bonding service from a rescue. Please also remember that this member is a child an his/her parents have been clear s/he can only have one guinea pig. I think we should be careful in how much we advise about getting another Guinea Pig.

HI
You mentioned nuggets and vegetables - do you also give him hay (only you didn't mention it ) as guinea pigs need constant access to hay (not straw) as 80% of their diet should be made up of this (apologies if you do - it's just that not every new piggy owner knows this ) - you have come to the right place for advice - as others have said perhaps show a few of these posts to your parents - you could also show your parents that youtube video about guinea pigs needing a friend - look at "why do guinea pigs need company" and Pet interviews - Guinea Pig (that's my favorite ).

Yes he always has a constant supply of hay available. I did a lot of reasearch after I adopted him.

I didn't adopt him from a rescue or anything by the way I adopted him off a website where you post unwanted pets and apparently no one wanted him because of what he looks like but to be honest I think he is really cute !
