Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could offer some help/advice on where I could possibly board our two piggies whilst on holiday later this year?

Normally, when I work away for 2-3 days at a time, my neighbours are happy to look to them, but we're going away for three weeks in summer and I'm struggling finding somewhere local that I could board them.

I've searched on "small mammal boarding" and found a couple that are about 20-30 miles away, but both where already fully booked up. I'm not sure if I'm searching on the wrong thing or whether there really are so few places for boarding piggies.

Any suggestions (or even better, recommendations) would be gratefully appreciated.

We're located in Blackburn, Lancashire.

Thanks,

Mark

Yeah three weeks is an unusually long time (yeah i dont think your neighbours will be to pleased) do you have any really good friends ?! As a last resort) have you tried using yell (www.yell.co.uk) ?! Where are you going if its aboard then you couldn't take them but if its in the united kingdom then maybe you could ?!
(i dont have any more ideas but I'm sure you will find something :) )

Hi Astrid, yeah, just over three weeks abroad...first holiday in a couple of years for me and my daughter, so no chance of taking them with us.

I wouldn't even consider asking neighbours or friedns for that length of time to be honest, besides, it's holiday season all round and they're off away also.

I'll have a look at Yell, to see if anything crops up. As I said, I'm not sure exactly sure what to search for.... I was using small mammal boarding or guinea pig boarding. Not as easy as finding a kennel that's for sure. :)

Thanks again.

Mark

There are lots of us who do animal boarding, I know I do and a few others on here, do bound to be someone on your area or a member who can recommend someone. Google guinea pig boarding Blackburn :)

A lot of guinea pig rescues also do boarding as a way of raising extra money. If there's one not too far away from you it will be good because they tend to have more experience of looking after piggies. If you've got a daytime flight then you could even find somewhere en route to the airport.

I do boarding www.littlebadgerspetcare.com It's not always local people who board with me, as many drop their guinea pigs and rabbits off with me on their way to the airport, or on the way to their holiday destination. Where are you going, and which way are you likely to be travelling? I am sure you can find somewhere en route if not locally to you.

Lisa and Ali, how do you find reputable pet sitters in your area? thanks

If you go onto the NarpsUK or Ukpettsitters websites, and enter your postcode, a list of sitters should come up in your area. We would start with NarpsUK.co.uk as the ones listed on this have all been checked. Once you have found one near you click on their website, and see what services they offer.
When we were researching one for our piggies, we even contacted our vet to ask them their opinions and we found out the one we picked was a vet nurse at our vets... Doh..

Most of my petsitting clients are referred to me by Simon, so yes, speaking to the vet is always a good starting place. x

If you can not find anywhere then as an absolute last resort you could speak to your vets. My vets looked after my piggies while I was on a business trip about 6 weeks ago. It will be more expensive but if you can't find any other alternative you could try that. x

Thanks for all the replies and apologies for the delayed response..just walked in from work.

I'm travelling early morning, so it couldn't be a drop off on the way to the airport, it would need to be the day before, which is fine by me.

I don't particularly fancy using a sitter that comes to the house. It's just a personal thing...don't really want people I don't know in the house whilst I'm not there (piggies live inside).

I've just found a place quite close by in that breeds and boards rabbits (thanks for the tip newtoguineas), so I'm just waiting to hear back.

Thanks again everyone.

It's a big decision to make . I personally prefer to take mine in

I hope it all works out. I (like you) was reluctant to think about using a house sitter. I have seen a van in our area from a company which does pet sitting but I don't fancy having a van parked outside my house with "we look after your pets while you are away" written on it's side.
I have a very good friend who looks after our house while we are away and she is willing to call in daily but, my guinea pigs need more attention than that !
Also, if we were burgled, I'd be more concerned about what the burglars may do to our pets than what they did to the rest of the house.
I have our guinea pigs booked into boarding for our next holiday. I have been to inspect the place they are going to and will have to trust my instincts that the person who runs it is OK.

PS. Our local pet shop was willing to board my guinea pigs but I wouldn't put my dog in there - if that's not an unfortunate pun !

Inspecting it is a must! At least that way you know what type of place your piggies are going to.

I wouldn't board my guinea piggies in a pet shop even if it was a last resort, but a vets yes.
