Hi,

I currently have two boars, who are very happy together. They live in my living room, and have daily play in the run outside.

I'm thinking about getting another pair of pigs, and would like to get two sows. However, I would want them to be in the living room as well, obviously kept apart from the boars, on different sides of the room. But I've never had boars and sows together at the same time. I'm worried if their proximity to each other might change the boars behaviour. Eli is top pig, and is already quite boisterous. I wouldn't want him to get overly hormonal or frustrated, and take it out on poor Merry.

Do you think I'm worrying too much, or would I be better off getting another pair of boars? (I'm not going to be breeding, I would just like to have some girls as well as boys.)

Ta :)

Maybe, maybe not

I have only ever had sows and boars in the garden and kept them on their own side. But boars behaviour did change when they got nearer to sows. But have looked after a friends boars and they showed no interest in sows at all. So think it depends on the boars. Which I know is no help to you at all. Sorry

I've always kept boars and sows in adjacent cages and never had a problem. In my piggie shed I have mainly boars, but there is a group of four sows and a pair of sows next to the boars.

I think a lot depends on the personality of the piggies.

Back when I had only a few piggies, I kept the boars and sows in the same room without a problem.

Now that I have more piggies, I don't have enough room for the cages in one room so sows are in one room and the boars in the other

Most of my boys (Except 3) are born here, so I gather they're very used to the smell of females. My boys never fight ever once because of the scent of females - Plus with the small housing in Singapore, there is no way we can afford to keep the two genders separated, far enough.

So I don't think it'll be a problem for mine since they're used to having females' scents around, I won't be too sure about yours though .

I too have a pair of boys who live next to & above girls & they're not bothered. The only time there is a change in their behaviour is when i put the girls in the run first.
