I was wondering if having boars and sows in the same room would work?

It depends on the set up. If you have the boars neutered and living as pairs with the sows it would work. If you have two boars together and then the sows together I do not think it would work. I think the smell could cause the boars to fight.

It depends to some part on the boars. Boars that have always lived with sows in the same roon/shed are often not too bothered, whereas boars that have been together on their own will react much more strongly and can fight and fall out, especially boars during the stroppy months when their relationship is under strain anyway.

Ideally, you want to keep the different sexes at opposite ends of the room, well out of sight and reach of the sow pheromones when they come into season. If that is not a possibility, you'd better keep the boars above any sows to minimise them being affected by pheromones.

What is not ideal is keeping sows and boars directly next to each other and in line of sight. That will cause problems with even the most laid back boars!

If they use the same run, always let your boars out first, for the same reasons.

I have almost all my pigs in the same room - 21 cages, bonded pairs and trios, with naughty singles living next door to each other (same sexes though).

I have the girls on the lower cages with the boys above so no bedding drops from the girl cages into the boy ones.

Oh no, they're still there. I thought the rehoming elves had visited in the night for a moment!

I can't say what I want to about the stuffed pig on the bottom shelf, what with it being a family forum and all :))

It really depends on the guinea pigs and the set up.

I have five girls and two 'in tact' boys. The boys live in the hutch above two of the girls, and opposite the other three. I have no problems whatsoever!

Its this image that makes me glad i just have the 3 piggies, all of those cages and all of the cleaning out.

I have 2 boys across the way from 2 girls and have never had any problems. They were intrigued when I brought a new girl home, but have never caused any trouble :)

I have a C&C with four girls on the bottom and two boys on the top. They've never been bothered about being in close proximity but will react when they hear the girls squeaking for food and then join in too!

I have nine girls living about 2ft above four boys with zero problems :(|)
I just take extra care with cleaning out etc. so the boys never get a whiff of them :)) Good handwashing is important and I never touch the girls until I've finished seeing to the lads - they're still oblivious to the divas upstairs after 12 months :(|)
I always tuck a few inches of the vet bed up the front of the girls pen to stop any poops/pee etc. and they all have their own bedding, blankets, cosies, etc. Everything is marked with their names so nothing ever gets mixed up rolleyes

When I adopted Elliot and Fergus, I put them in the same room as my girl group and they were rumbling around and mounting each other almost constantly. So, I had a little shift around and swapped them with another pair of 'intact' boars. Elliot and Fergus stopped instantly, obviously the females were driving them mad, and they have been great ever since. :)) The two that are in the same room now are fine, they don't mind at all....I think it just depends on the piggies! :(|)

I am also really careful not to mix bedding, snuggle sacks etc, I have a pile of 'boar' fleeces and a pile of 'sow' fleeces. Sadly, I go one step further and each piggy has been allocated a 'colour'...same colour for the food tray/fleece/sacks/lap pads etc. This may ce slightly OCD, but it saves a lot of problems! ;)

Susie, my house is a little bit like yours! :(|)

LOL - Don't worry, I'm sure I get called a lot worse!

Here's a vid tour of the rescue cages taken last month, so some residents have moved on and others moved in since then, but it will give you an idea of my lot and how little they are affected by boars and sows in the same room.

*Warning* contains graphic images of piggy lips at the end.

x) See what you mean about the piggy lips xoxo I laughed so loud at the last bit :))

I have 14 pigs in 4 cages, in the same room...

I have Coconut with his piggy-wife Cinnamon and their 4 daughters (incl their adopted daughter), Rasher with his piggy-wife and their daughter, Pancake with his two piggy-wives and Wiiiiieek with his piggy-wife.

I've never had any problems with this set up and the boys often chat to each other through their bars, as do all the sows and they're not aggressive about it at all.

OMG I wish this question wouldn't have been answered the way it was...you all mean I could possibly have a pair of boars in the same room with my herd of ladies with their neutered boar....oh dear oh dear...;)
