Boars or Sows?

I've heard boars are supposed to be friendlier but TBH I went to my local rescue and we wanted an abyssinian and she showed us this young sow who was too beautiful to pass up so we have two girls and they are lovely. We are first time piggie owners and had our girls a week now

Guinea pigs are such big individual characters that there are no hard and fast rules - and how much you get out of them depends in the end on how much you put into them.

I would strongly recommend to consider rehoming from a reputable rescue in your area; ask for their requirements. Meeting the piggies in pigson and with an open mind, I am sure that you will find the ones that are right for you, whichever gender or age!

Going rescue will ensure that you only rehome healthy, properly sexed and guaranteed not pregnant and well bonded piggies. Rescues know their piggies' characters and care for their wellbeing. You will also get support and advice during the settling in period.

All my piggies are rescues - you wouldn't have thought that, would you?

I've had boys, girls and mixed pairs. Currently I have a piggy Tribe of one neutered boar and ten sows.

I've got both male & female and love them all but I have to say that Albie is by far the friendliest piggy of them all, yet Alfie can be evil :)), most of my girls are very friendly except Shy but I think hers is a trust issue, Lottie & willow will come out as soon as the door is open and trample all over my feet lol.
Peppa will come to you eventually and betty & daisy are fine after a few mins of holding them.
I think boys are a little bit more bolshy and inquisitive which makes them appear more friendly.
But a piggy is a piggy and they'll love you no matter what if they are treated properly.
Can't wait to see pictures x

I also recommend rescue piggies, I was naive enough to think they would only have older pigs but they even had babies that weren't ready to be separated from mum. Again they are well looked after and the people working their tend to know their personalities, it was touching to see the owner very attached to Bea who we ended up bringing home.

Neutered boar and sow pairing has been what i've had in the past and they've got on very well. I've got two boys and two girls now and they're lovely too so I dont think it matters! :))

I have 2 baby boys who are amazingly cuddly & affectionate & playful. But years ago I had a gorgeous girl who was a chunky cuddle addict. I think it just maybe depends on the piggy...

I'd always had girls and said I always would til Dodge came along...

Then went to a rescue to get a pair of sows and came home instead with my other two boys...

Now have my two 'old girls' Whiskey and Noodles, Dodge had the snip and lives with Cherry who LauraLucy very kindly rehomed to me, Bumble and JoJo had to be separated so Bumble was snipped and lives with his wife Pixie, and JoJo is alone pending his snip in a weeks time!

And yesterday we picked up Honey who is currently in with Whiskey and Noodles - which shows how versatile guineas are, that two almost 5 year old sows one of whom seems to be losing her sight and both who are very set in their ways, will, after a bit of grumbling, happily accept a young sow. She will be moving in with JoJo if they get on ok, but didn't want her to be alone in the mean time.

Keep an open mind, and if all else fails, follow your heart...I have never got a guinea I didn't feel that draw to, and all mine are fantastic (but then I am biased!)

Hello :)p

I think they are all lovely ^) but to answer your question I think an older sows, say about 2yrs would be best for a first timer.

Enyoy whatever you deside to have.

I actually know of someone, she runs a small rescue, who has two 2 year old sows she is looking for a home for. They are gorgeous, if I had the room I would have taken them with me, one is a rex and pure white, the other resembles some sort of muppet i.e. has crazy long hair! and is ginger, black and white. The previous owners couldn't take them to their new rented placed unfortunately. Not sure what part of London you are in but message me if they do tickle your fancy :)

thanks for that, but I can't have piggies for another 6-12 months at least. :) I hope they get a great home.

thanks everyone for your answers. I think I'll just go to the rescue and see who takes my fancy. :))

No worries :) you're very patient, I am rubbish at waiting!

It is great that you are planning ahead and informing yourself of what you need! I am sure that there will be piggies around when you are ready to rehome!

It also might not be a bad idea to start a "piggy bank" now with monthly or weekly contributions in order to cover medical cost since vet bills are going up quickly at the moment. There is some insurance out for exotic pets (under which guinea pigs fall) but it is frankly not very good.
