Boars - why the bad press?!

All my boars are bonded and really seem to love their cage mate. They all cuddle up together too. I don't really get this closeness with any of my girls though, apart from Poppet and Skye.

I remember being told, when I first got piggies, that you couldn't keep males together and I believed that for years. One day I was at the vets and a lady came in with three bonded males. I was stunned! How things have changed. I never worry about putting males together because I have never had a problem. However when putting my girls together I really panic because so many times it hasn't worked!

I love all my piggies, but generally I find my boys more loving. Well apart from Miss Poppet!

Quite a lot of people that come to me for piggies have been told you can only have boars by themselves... I dread to think of all the poor boys out there living solitary lives because their well-meaning owners were misinformed.

I've managed to pair off all of my single boars with baby boars now, with a good success rate. The only chaps living by themselves are George (who bit Zippy's face badly and is having some time out!) and Father Abraham who is waiting to be paired up with a baby boar. I'm sure there's the odd one that can't but often it's just a matter of juggling, luckily (!) there are lots of pigs at mine to juggle with!

I LOVE my boar! He is the biggest softie i've ever met and he hasn't ever gone for a human or tried to bite another pig. He gets very jealous though, Once I picked up a small teddy bear i put in his cage for 'company' cuddled the teddy and teddy got picked up and thrown across to the other end of the room!

When i first decided to get a guinea pig i never found this site i decided to have a read through a book i brought from a pet shop then went to have alook. I fell in love with lincoln when i saw him on the poster on the hutch, when she brought him out i had to take him. The 2 shop assistants in the pet shop told me i must keep him on his own. They said if i wanted a pair i must have sows. It said the same in the book. I was lucky as Lincoln perfers his own company but my other boars wouldnt be without there friends. Its a shame as lots of boars are on there own but the owner thinks there doing the best for there piggy. I dont understand the boar thing either. I love my girlies but boars are by far my favourite. they have so much character and are so affectionate.

We currently have 5 sows and 2 boars.

Like others, I try my hardest NOT to have any favourites... but we all know how hard this is.

Our 2 boars were the first piglets we got and so they do occupy a certain place in our hearts. Our two are brothers and have (touch wood) never had any problems, and both are just coming through what should be the end of puberty. Sure, there's the odd bit of humping, but nothing our sows don't get up to. In fact, when one of our sows is on heat she terrorizes the others and chases them round the cage looking for humps! They also will headbutt or go for other sows when one tries to come into a snuggle or hidey-house - our boys really don't do this. In fact, our boys snuggle together a lot more than our girls do - and that's cute - two big fat cat-sized boys curling up together.

It's a shame that so much misinformation is bandied about regarding boars. If an owner is willing to keep a vigilant eye on their pets (and which pet owner shouldn't be?) then there shouldn't be ANY more trouble looking after boys, certainly in terms of day-to-day care.

I'm currently on the lookout for some lunky boys to add to the sty! Long live boars. xx>>>

I love all my pigs the same but the boars are so funny at the moment. They've just realised that the girls are next door & have been trying their best to get to them. This morning I went into their room to find all their toys & snuggles were piled up in the corner in an attempt to get over the fence!:))

for those who have pairs of boars and also sows near each other do you find that having the sows close can make the boys argue? When out in the garden do you keep them well away from each other?

My boys don't argue as such but they will knock each other off the place where they are sitting if one can't see the girls!:))

The boars that we have owned over the years are legends to us. Boars are great! They are usually braver than sows and more acceptable to change.

Joey was the one we all loved the most. He was gentle and accepted anything really. Young boars or sows. Although most of his life he was unwell, he lived until he was over 5 years old. He was just a lovely piggy!

I love boars!
