Bonding help please

At first they sat hunched touching each other. Then they started moving around. She is under the pile of hay and hasn’t come out, he goes up to her and rumbles a bit lays down beside her hay lump then goes off and then repeats. Oh yes and at one point they were sat together eating and both squeaking

He has climbed into the pile of hay with her I guess they are having a nap. Will they overheat or if they get hot will they come out? It is a scorching day in Cornwall U.K. (probably 26 degrees) got some doors open but it is still fairly warm inside, worried if they are sat together in a hot hay pile they will boil! Are they daft enough to overheat without coming out? I know you can give the cool packs but they aren’t indicating they are too hot.

They won’t even use any of the water we have put in, the normal water bottle is a bit higher than normal due to the position on the floor but we have put in a bowl too(they don’t normally have a bowl) no one has drunk anything since 12

Thanks for that, I knew they did not sweat but didn’t link that to not needing extra water. He and she have just been sleeping in their hay pile together. No signs of rejection. Will wait til it cools off and see what they do (even my bonded girls haven’t moved all day.) Everyone has had cucumber and pepper to chew on. Bit of moisture and to try and get the bonding pair to do something together. And if you give something to one they all want some! If by 9/10 pm tonight everything still seems calm and happy we will put them in a cleaned out cage with new hides etc?

She had not drunk for five hours. We tried to gently catch her to give her a drink but she did not want to be caught so I said don’t stress her, we will just give them cucumber. However she has now come out of the hay pile allowed him to sniff her bum and rumble aro7nd her. She ate both bits of cucumber so I think she was thirsty but scared. Having been chased in one circle by mum then left alone she has become much more active and staying out of the:pile, it’s as if she now knows she won’t get attacked if she shows herself. she does keep pushing him away when he gets too frisky. But I imagine that is normal, no teeth chattering, no biting.

Please don’t worry about the drinking - they drink what they need and for some piggies that isn’t very much.

The bonding sounds very positive!
Yes she will only allow him to mount her when she is in season

She is the little brown lass. You will recognise the boys long white brown black fur.

He is sniffing her bum big time with no issues she doesn’t complain but sometimes he will raise his head at her and she raise it back with little jabbing motions all while squeaking to each other,is that just her saying don’t you dare mount me right now?

My has taken a video of some of their behaviours and I will get my brother to put online and link them here again. Then perhaps you can tell me if you think they are ready to move to the cage he has been in.

My brother has managed to mix four videos in one here, and there will be another link in a min to some of there more sparring time moments

Hi

Please take a deep breath. They have accepted each other. Your girl is making the normal noises for a sow saying 'I am not in season and ready to mate with you' and making the right moves to gently fend off any advances - which he is frankly not pushing very much.

That is pretty much daily life in a mixed bond and absolutely nothing to worry about.

She has likely submitted and allowed him to mount her a sign of her acceptance right at the start. Now they are in the leadership reaffirmation phase and it is frankly as mild as it can get. You can think about moving them into the cage together so you can watch them settling in before the night. But you have got a happily bonded pair. ;)

PS: Have you considered giving your boy a shorter summer haircut?

Ok it was clean brand new two days ago, how much cleaning of the coroplast do you think is required? And would you move the fleece they are on and the pile of hay into the clean cage? It is one of my old fleeces but was good for the carpet as it has a waterproof back. Either that or I can put a brand new easy to dry fleece in.

I would put fresh bedding in their cage.
You can rub the fresh fleece in the cage with the fleece from the bonding pen to transfer both their scent if you want

Thank you so much, he has actually got a much shorter bum hair it looks a mess as they let it get pretty bad at the rescue. We generally let his longer locks stay in place except the bum (although it does seem to be growing exponentially he is only 5 months so may need to trim other parts of him too)

To be honest, it doesn't matter as much in this case; as long as there is not the scent of a third piggy on any of the fleeces. It's going to be a territory marking bum wiping fest in the new cage anyway. But you can move their bonding hay across if you wish to. ;)

I would cut his hair much shorter also - definitely across his back half, bottom and back legs but when i had a long haired boy, in summer I used to cut all his hair short all over his body to help keep him cool.

Sorry, iPad died, we will attempt cyputting it, shorted but not today mum is knackered and I can’t actually do much other than cuddle them, watch them and wrap up their veg in brown paper. They are now in the cage, they feel much safer In that up higher than on the floor by the door (only place we could be away from button!) which had cats and dog coming to the door hot and bothered looking at us saying we are hot and bothered. Thee has been much more chasing etc she has let him catch her a few times. They are very happy, he has been popcorninglike crazy. And is now flat out on the cage floor exhausted. Thanks for all your help. And we will do to what we can with his fur, problem is he makes such a fuss he pulls the fur out by the root, struggling away from the scissors. Even though we never hurt him and when he sits still it is cut nicely without him actually feeling it but he goes crazy when he sees the scissors!

Glad that all has gone well and that you have a very, very happy boy! It sounds like the start of a life-long love affair.:yahoo:

PS: Please watch the hair cutting video in the guide with the clippers - it's much quicker and doesn't pull. Just don't do it where he can harm himself if he jumps. ;)

Ok I will. I have just realised something. She has come with change over food, different to his, do we give them half and half tonight? I know you should do 75% 25 but it will be a different food for both of them? So 50 50 seems the only possibility. At some point I plan to change them to grain free but right now they are still having science selective normal.

It sure is a love affair. He has spent the last hour chasing her round the cage, sometimes mounting her but generally her just leading him on a merry chase! So telling him off. I think she is happy with her new husband, and he is over the moon. Poor boy has been alone for 3 months, rejected by two females, he is now very happy. Thanks for your help!

He'll get over his over-excitement but life is good and she knows that he is happy to have her. ;)

I hope that you get some sleep yourself now...

You can see whether she will eat what he eats. If not, you the half/half. But she looks young enough to follow his guidance and take his cues.
