Hello from Canada! I’m a New Guinea pig owner. I’ve had a pair of rabbits for a couple years now and I’m just not familiar with guinea pig language and behaviour to be confident that I’m doing things right. I really need guidance so that my two new boys remain safe. First off they’re nowhere near the rabbits. I got my first piggie Hank about three months ago and Biff followed about a month later. Hank was approx five months so had already reached maturity. Biff was possibly two months so he’s not matured yet. Hank the older guy is clearly the dominant one. Biff follows him around squeaking and is overall a big chicken. They started out in separate enclosures which were eventually moved side by side. They’d hang out with each other through the bars when enclosed and when hank was running free. They’re now at the point where their enclosures have been made into one and they both have free run of their own room. They’ve stuck together like glue but lately it’s more biff doing the sticking. Hank still sometimes slithers around Biff making that loud purring sound. They share a big litter/feeding box as when they had separate ones they were sharing both anyway. They eat side by side but hank will occasionally nip (no actual biting) if biff gets too close. They have separate bowls for their kibble but biff likes to nibble with hank and naturally hank shoos him away. So my concern is how it will progress from here. When biff reaches maturity will there be aggression? Is hank likely to actually fight with biff, will Biff become aggressive? Should I separate the enclosure again until Biff matures, did I put them together too early?
Please and thanks!

Hey there and welcome here
We can't say how biff would be right now as piggies can change overtime but looks like he would be the dominant one and would fight the submissive one for his throne
Absolutely there could be aggression in him when he reaches the teenage which usually starts at 4 months of age and lasts till 14 months of age. Due to the testosterone kicking in, there would be alot of rumblestrutting( the purring with wiggling bum ) and alot of humping too by the dominant piggy so yes there could be aggression too and there could even be a potential fight between them if things doesn't settle between them.
I would say wait more don't separate them
Only separate them if Biff attacks the other one too harshly that blood comes out or if u see he is really bullying him otherwise it is not necessary and little poking and humping would easily be settled down between them so there's no need to worry now just keep an eye on them on future good luck😀

First of all, Hank has not reached maturity. At five months old he is just at the start of the teenage months. Guinea pigs don’t become adult until 14 months of age.
What you are dealing with are two teenagers who are setting up their relationship and dealing with hormomes. The behaviour you are describing sounds perfectly normal and what you would expect for two teenage boys. They certainly don’t need to be separated. The key to not upsetting their relationship is to ensure they always remain together from now on. Any separation means they would need to start the bonding process all over again when you put them back together. You only need to separate if a full on blood drawing fight occurs or if there is constant bullying such as one piggy never being allowed to eat.

An important thing for two teenage boars is ensuring you have multiple of every item - so two food bowls, bottles, two hay piles, three or four beds. If they then choose to share, that is up to them

That’s a great help thank you for the insight! ❤️❤️

Is Biff the dominant one or Hank? I got mixed up I am sorry

Hank sounds to be the dominant.

You will continue to see rumblestrutting (the purring sound), humping and other dominance displays throughout the entire of the teenage months (so from now until around 14 months of age). But even once they are adult, they will continue to do it throughout their lives

Awesome thanks for the advice and the education! They do have multiple hiding spots and and two water bowls. I’ll get on the separate hay feeders ASAP👌

I feel so dumb I messed up the names and now the whole reply of the thread seems to be odd and wrong😧

I have the same with my two sows. Daisy is the dominant one while Dandy is submissive.
They sound just like Hank and Biff, Dandy follows Daisy around and sometimes Daisy gets annoyed, purrs and will nip at Dandy. She's never actually bitten her though. I've noticed as they mature, they are now both 1 year olds, they seem to do it a lot less in comparison to when I first had them at 12 weeks.
Hopefully it will get better as they get older for you!

One pointer that might help, I found my piggies annoying each other when they had a shared house with only one entrance. Daisy would be inside and Dandy would run in the entrance and disrupt Daisy in doing so. I bought a house with two separate entrances and this helped, they've taken to using one entrance/side of the house each now. (see photo below)

That’s great to know I thought it should have stopped by now. I thought now that they’re so comfortable with scooter it should have stopped and that maybe Hank is doing it out of irritation. I’m learning so much thank you!

Thank you for the comparison it’s good to know this is totally normal. They do have separate entrances but Biff uses whichever ones Hank uses first. What a beautiful little house that is by the way!
