I have recently adopted my first piggie :)
Now after learning more about them after being led to believe he would be happy alone I am trying to find him a friend.

He is 2 years old and previously lived with his brother but they began to fight and so were separated, he has also been boar dated unsuccessfully. All this prior to my adopting him.

Is it worth trying to boar date him again or would neutering him and finding him a sow be a better option now?

A neutered boar and sow usually make the greatest of dynamics - you can always add more girls then ;)
It's all about the personalities of each piggy for successful bonding so the choice is yours, there is always a little friend out there somewhere for another piggy so boar dating is the best option.
My Sally and Amelia got along on supervised introductions but fought when we tried them in the pen with the herd so we took Sally dating.
I was apprehensive as she's quite a feisty little girl and wanted 'top spot' from Amelia but she fell in love with two sows looking for love so one became three and oddly, there doesn't appear to be any heirarchy in the trio :{ :x
There are no concrete bondings with any piggies, we always keep that in mind that any pair or group of piggies can have a fall out so have a 'plan' should it happen rather than panic.
Some piggies just won't accept another regardless so think as long as there's others next to a lone piggy, they'll live happily.
I would exhaust all avenues first before resorting to keeping a piggy single :)

Thanks for that, I have contacted a rescue to try and match him up with a male firstly, if no luck then I will explore neutering him.
