Bonding Techniques

Hi we just lost Barry last night and he leaves behind his friend Teddy. They were together when I rescued them aged 2. However they were fighting so was advised to separate. They were in hutches next to each other and saw each other most days in seperate outdoor runs in garden as it's been so cold we had brought them in to an indoor cage with a divider down the middle which was nice as it was wire and they could see each other. They are both now 7 approx. Sadly barry died last night through I suspect old age or his ongoing bumble foot infection. It was very peaceful and he died in my arms.

My question is do i get another friend for teddy now? And do I try putting them in together now rather than separate again? What is advisable and what is the bonding process?
I've read there are bonding date nights at rescues but I'm not really interested in this as I live too far away from my local one. I'm in swindon Wiltshire. I'd just do it myself if possible. I also don't want to get teddy neutered.

I'm so sorry you've lost your wee boy. It's good that you're getting a pal for Teddy, as this will help him to be happy. It's never a guarantee that piggies will get on, especially boys, but you already know this. What rescues do is to take your piggy and introduce him to others until they get one he gets on with. This can take a while, so some rescues will board your little one with them while they do that. If that still doesn't suit, it's really just luck whether a new boy and Teddy will take to each other. As Teddy is older, you've a better chance than if he was a youngster. but whatever you do, follow the bonding guides that you'll find under the forums tab at the top of the page. I had a failed bonding, and I'm sure it was because I didn't know how to do it properly. Good luck in your search for a new friend for Teddy, and sorry once again for your loss. X

You may be lucky enough to have a rescue near you & they will bond 2 lads. Or it could be possible for you to take a piggy home & hopefully bond like that, returning the ones that won't get on.
