Good morning,

I have a 2.5 year old boy Bumble who lost his partner a few weeks ago. I really wanted to rehome a piggy but will live along way away from the nearest rescue. We found one which was 4 hours drive away and as I had previously read some time ago that piggies travel ok we thought we would go there. They had a beautiful Teddy Piggy of similar age which we brought home. This is my worry.

We bonded them in a neutral place and after a few hours they were really getting use to each other. They were eating together, however, I didn't see Percy drink all afternoon. As they looked like they were doing well we moved them into their permanent home. We know that you must clean and remove all previous smells from their new enclosure and I tried my best to do this. Our enclosure is in a room and it is very big. Its not an enclosure I can disinfect as it has wooden sides and it is on carpet on the floor. We cover the carpet with fleece liners on the floor. However, I hoovered the carpet and put all clean liners down and did the best I could. It is a very large enclosurer. Since we put them back in Bumble has been very territorial as he clearly knows its his home even if I've tried to clean away his smells. After their first night together they have not hurt each other but Percy the new guy he is just sitting like he is stunned.
My worry is that he might get dehraydrated as I haven't seen him go to the water bottle.
What should I do? Can anyone offer advise I can not stop worrying about him.
Thank you.

Ps I've attached pictures of them during bonding.

Please do not worry. Guinea pigs actually drink very little and they get most of their water intake from vegetables. Percy will drink if he wants to. He will not get dehydrated.

Just keep an eye on them as they get to know each other but it all sounds good so far 🙂

Bumble and Percy are beautiful 🥰

I agree with Claire W. If he’s eating veggies and a bit of grass (as seen in the photo) then I’m sure he will be fine. Also some piggies just don’t drink much anyway. This might be normal for Percy.

They are gorgeous 💙💙

I agree. the amount a piggy drinks varies a lot - some drinking a little, others a lot

The need to drink comes before the need to eat so if a piggy is eating then they will be drinking

I wonder if Percy is used to a bottle, maybe he has not used one before? You could try giving him a small shallow bowl of water and see if he drinks that. As the other's have said he may just not be thirsty.

Wow thank you all. I will confirm with the Piggy sanctuary but I am sure I saw a bottle in his enclosure. However, I am going to put a small bowl down too. You're all so kind and helpful.
