Bonfire Night - What you can do for your piggies

How’s every pig coping with the fireworks? H&H demanded dinner in bed…. Although Hector decided to sit on top of Hamish at one point, Hamish wasn’t impressed & left!

I have just made the boys an extra fleece tent over a few hiding spots.
We hoomans had dinner to classic FM.

Mine have been grumbling a bit. I've had podcasts on the computer as they don't like music much, talking is better. The last 2 nights we had very loud bangs right overhead, the noise made the doors and windows rattle. That upset them a bit. Tonight there's been a lot more (still going on) but they are more like ordinary firework bangs. 3 of them have given up hiding and have come out for hay so they must be getting used to it.

We’ve had all the lights on blinds shut and classical FM on. They’ve coped very well apart from hazel who’s always been more sensitive to sound. And has been quite nervous. She’s spent most the evening on my lap in the living room hiding under a blanket as she’s just so sensitive to noise. They do a display over at the lake not far from us so sadly they’re so close. She’s much better now they’re over. Wish they had soundless displays 💔

I keep checking on our boys, and have piggy cam on. I must be very lucky as they are not bothered at all.
They are all eating away, sprawled out in the middle of the cages. No one is hiding 😊

I must be lucky as Koda isn’t bothered either.

Also been to check on all of the horses, and everyone is settled 🥰

I've had two goblins stick to their beds for a few days now - partly the cold, partly (I'm guessing) the fireworks. So when I went to pop my head in 10 minutes ago I was expecting to say "Hey, we good?" get no reply and then go downstairs to grab some food. True to goblin form I opened the door to see them sitting facing each other and munching on the mound of hay between them  not getting food for just me, then!

Honestly though the fireworks today have been much, much better than yesterday. Either that or they're setting them off further away, because even I kept jumping at them yesterday.

Glad that bonfire night isn’t a thing over here, had enough of the Halloween fireworks. Roll on Christmas - that’s all I can say! My two just take to their tents for the loudest of bangs. They come out again quite quickly tho.

It took me several years of living in England to realise there's a reason the country goes nuts for fireworks in November :coat:

I really can't understand why firework can't be silent and Chinese lanterns not allowed for sale. Other countries can do it - why not the UK?

I don't like Chinese/sky lanterns as well. They are bad for the wild life. According to RSPCA, they are banned in Wales on all council land.

Why would you know really what the reason was, it's such a local thing? I wonder how many English folks, especially the younger ones, know why there is all the hoo-hah on July 12th in Northern Ireland - my 17 year old didn't. He did know that Bonfire Night was about Guy Fawkes trying to blow up a king, though he got the wrong one. I think the reason is on the way to fading into the mists of history, after all it tends to be referred to only as Bonfire Night and to be just an excuse for firework parties these days. In these Northern latitudes we love our fires and fireworks as the nights draw in! Also Halloween is much bigger now, than 5th November and than it used to be, and becoming very commercial.
And now some people say, " Come back Guy Fawkes, where are you when we need you?"
Just to say, a lot of our politicians are a right shower, but I think common sense will prevail eventually...I'd still rather be here than in Russia China or Iran for example

I mean we heard about in primary school, I think P4? So that's age 7-8 for us, back before Labour won the general election in...97? It came up as a discussion (including the rhyme) in that but I honestly hadn't realised it was a Thing, lol. Certainly not as big as it is. But it shouldn't have taken me several years to realise something was up lol.

I don't blame anyone not from NI not being sure on the Twelfth, though. There's a good few from NI aren't sure on it either. It's the Protestants fault but the Catholics fault but East Belfast's fault but West Belfast's fault and did you know we build bonfires so large they need cherry pickers for them? I'm reminded of a Mock the Week sketch from years back when Dara was talking about the water cannon and the London Riots - he'd do a show in Northern Ireland and they'd know precisely where all the water cannon in the country are (and why) but go to various parts of England and...nope.

That said, at least we've less fireworks.

I hate all these silly birthday helium balloons. The amount we see either washed up on our beaches or actually floating around miles out at sea is truly shocking

Balloons in general. I know it probably sounds awful but every time I see a thing about "releasing balloons in memorial" I wish I had the ability to just...block it. Stop it happening. Maybe that sounds cruel, like how dare I stop them when they're grieving or whatever, but all balloons do is look cool as a bunch and then, almost immediately, turn into plastic waste that wrecks the local wildlife, on land and sea.

Ahhh Northern Ireland - we’re a pack of eejits! I want to move to Canada. I imagine it to be nice there. I’d live where there are wild moose 😁

I moved 9 years ago this month, and I don't regret doing it for a second.

Quite agree that fireworks, Chinese lanterns and balloon releasing needs to be banned for good. So much death and destruction caused by all of the above.

There are laser light displays that cause no harm. No loud noises and no smoke to terrify and cause misery to animals and people.

The fireworks here last night we awful. The loud ones sounds like bombs going off so it sounded like a warzone. I stayed up late with the boys and had music on to try to drown out the noise. It started again after I went to bed so I got up and came to sit with the boys again. They didn't like it at all.

Last summer one of those big balloons filled with gold glittery circles burst over our garden and next door. My neighbour and I picked up and binned the mess, we are both still finding gold shinny circles this year!

That's awful. Selfish, inconsiderate people do this and don't even think of the effect it has on others who are left to clear up the mess.
Animals eating these things are the worst casualties.

We regulary pick old hellium balloons on our walks, and bring them home to bin. Makes me sad.
