Hi

We very sadly lost our new rescue Piggie this evening. We’d had her for just under 3 months. She was around 1 (exact age unknown). She was vet checked by the rescue and again by our exotic vet on arrival.

We recently noticed her sneezing. She then started to lose weight, and had eye discharge, so we got her to the vet the next day. They prescribed baytril and metacam for a URI and said it could be Bordatella, but that her heart and lungs were fine. 4 days later, she died.

My question is for our 3 other Guinea pigs - 6months, 3 years and a senior. The senior has already been checked by the vet for occasional sneezing (at the same time as her cage mate was diagnosed), but didn’t need antibiotics at that point.

Should I now get antibiotics for them all? I’ll thoroughly clean the cage and strip all the fleece bedding. What else can I do to reduce the risk for them? How many days / weeks until I know they won’t get sick too?

Thanks so much.

Morning I'm so sorry for your loss it is not something I have experienced but sending hugs to all your other guineas and I hope they are all fine. I'm sure someone with some advise will be on here soon 💐

Hi and welcome

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry that you are up against one of the real nasties. Exposure will have likely happened. Please discuss the advisability of preventative antibiotics with your vet, who is better poised to know whether it may work or not.

Bordetella is very often fatal for guinea pigs, unfortunately.

You may find this guide link here helpful. We don't have much experience with bordetella since we recommend to keep rabbits and guinea pigs spacially separated. Most cases on here have come from visiting dogs with kennel cough.
