And I'm so nervous! He's having a lump removed from his jaw/neck area that doesn't seem to be growing or causing him any trouble. But the vet feels more comfortable getting it out just in case it's anything nasty - I'm terrified.

The vet herself has pigs but is quite young, and said she'd have the head vet with her for the surgery, this is making me more nervous as the head vet is pretty cold and blase. But they seem confident that it will all go fine, but I'm panicking beyond belief. What if it's a harmless lump and he doesn't pull through? I'd have essentially killed him for nothing :(

Just needing some words of support guys, had surgery myself this week and was nowhere near this nervous for that!

My pigs have had 8 operations between them - including one operation lasting nearly an hour - and one where my other pig broke 3 needles when my vet was stitching him up because he had skin like a Rhino - all of them (3 lump removals - 2 spays and 3 bladder ops ) have come through fine - I am sure your piggy will be ok.

My Violet had surgery last week to remove a lump from her groin and also had a spay at the same time for large ovarian cysts. I was worried to death but she has come through it all fine and is amazing me with the speed of her recovery. Connie went with her for company and I think that has helped her. I know what a worrying time this is for you but I am sure that the procedure will be done as quickly as possible to reduce the amount of time under anaesthetic. Big hugs to you.

Fingers crossed! Hope everything goes well!
And don't worry about the head vet being cold and blase, I've met some surgeons (not vets) that were quite like that but in the end they were pretty good and they cared for their patients!

Thanks everyone, dropped him off at 9 and he's going to be the last surgery of the day so both vets can work on him.

She said if they can't remove the lump they'll take a biopsy to find out what it is. I'm already clock watching and having worries!

 It will be a tense wait, but I think it's helpful to remind yourself that most piggies cope well with surgery. It's always the unknown, but he should be just fine, and from there hopefully it will be much more clearer as to where to go from there. Let's hope it's a harmless lump and the surgery marks the end of the issue x

He's ok! Just got a call, he's coming round fine and they managed to remove the lump. They couldn't tell what it is and wanted to send it off but unfortunately, I can't afford it :(

I'm just so relieved he's ok, even if the not knowing will bug me!

Thank you everyone for the thoughts!

He is now home and munching on some hay, vet thinks (but obviously cannot say for certain) that it is a soft tissue sarcoma, so operating was the best thing.

Thank you all for the well wishes and kind words, he's being spoilt rotten and all wrapped up warm x

Some pictures for you all!

His lump, hard to make out but around the size of a marble on his left jaw/neck

He flopped over and napped almost straight after getting home

He was laying on the wound after we got home, he seemed less than fazed by it!

He's fussing over it a bit now, but he's picking at food and running around his cage, aggressively shoving things out the way (think he is upset at me!)

Should Boris have been prescribed some antibiotics to help prevent infection? He has been given metacam to have 2x a day but no Baytril or the like. I'm concerned that the placement of the wound means it is constantly getting dirty, so could get infected and lead to further problems

Yes my vet always prescribes ABs post op. Give the vets a ring this morning just in case. Marbocyl or Septrin are kinder to the tummy than Baytril x

Awwww wishing Boris a speedy recovery :love::love::love:
On my experience of ops my piggies were given metacam and baytril.
Perhaps put a call into the vets and enquire.

He's recovering so well already! Very much himself :) And I rung and they're putting a bottle aside for me to collect later :)

I gave them a ring, they're putting some Baytril aside for him :) I don't think my vet even carry Marbocyl or Septrin :( I've got some Pro-biotics though, to keep his tummy settled x
